Warning On Rural Volunteering Numbers
Caution needed over demands on rural volunteers, warns Scotland’s Rural College Study SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) News Release Number: 13R81 Date: 02.06.13 www.sruc.ac.uk/news Policymakers expecting volunteers to play a bigger role in delivering local services may need to re-think their strategy for rural areas, according to research led by Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC). In a study published during Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June), SRUC’s Rural Society Research Team and Stirling University found Scotland’s rural volunteers often undertake roles to fill gaps in service provision such as providing transport, acting a ‘first responders’ in medical emergencies and doing odd jobs.

Wick High School's Amazing Results In Apps Competition
News this week that an amazing 5 of 24 teams competing for the UK “Apps for Good” http://www.appsforgood.org/ awards come from Wick High School. Wick High School is the first in Scotland to enter the competition, which will take the teams to London for work experience (“hothouses”) with high-tech companies in Tech City in London before making “dragon’s den” pitches for their app ideas.

Summer Drink/Drug Driving Initiative
Drivers in the Highlands and Islands are being urged not to spoil the party this summer by getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Tomorrow sees the beginning of a four week campaign focusing on drink and drug driving across Scotland.29/5/2013

Highland youth participation has voice in planning of public services
Members of the Highland Council’s Adult and Children Services Committee heard this week that young people’s participation is making a positive difference in the planning and provision of children’s services in The Highland Council, Police Scotland Highland and Islands Division, and NHS Highland. Ainya Taylor, Highland Youth Convener, and Highland Youth Voice members, Sannies Macleod from Wick, Bee Nicolson from Inverness and Finlay Allmond from Nairn gave a presentation on how Youth Participation is helping service providers to improve services and how it also helps them, as young people, develop.

The Johnston Collection Digitisation Project
Revealing the past The Johnston Collection is a unique photographic archive of life in and around Wick, once the capital of the herring industry in Europe. Held in trust by the Wick Society, the collection consists of over 50,000 black and white images, taken by three generations of a local photographic firm from 1863-1975.

Celebration for rural community projects across the Highlands
Rural community projects across the Highlands are celebrated in The Highland LEADER Programme’s ‘Revitalising Communities in the Highlands’ booklet launched at the full Highland Council on Europe Day earlier this month. Over 90 of the 358 local projects funded by the LEADER Programme are bought to life with quotes and photographs in the booklet.

Funding to improve safety for pupils walking and cycling to school
Both Canisbay Primary in Caithness and Edderton Primary in Sutherland have been awarded funding to improve safety for pupils walking and cycling to and from school. The Cycling, Walking and Safer Streets (CWSS) Programme is funded by the Scottish Government with £237,000 available in Highland.20/5/2013
National campaign calls for support from Highland to listen to kids in care
The Highland Council has joined a national campaign to give a stronger voice to children and young people in care and leaving care by tackling discrimination head on. Six looked after children from the Highlands, aged 14-17, signed up to the campaign at the National Young Persons Conference in Edinburgh today (Tuesday).19/5/2013

Highland Magician with strong links to Caithness, Clive Grewcock is proving to be a talking point and creating a stir amongst private parties and more notably at pre-wedding gatherings. “At first it all sounds really crazy but from experience and the interest this aspect of performance Magic is attracting groups, and in particular bridal parties before the big day want this mystery magic which combines mental magic, mind reading and uncovering old stories ” The immediate conclusion is that it is paranormal stories but Clive points out that there is most definitely nothing supernatural about this, which is why it has been labelled as mystery magic.

Highland Council takes zero tolerance stance on littering
A zero tolerance approach to littering in the Highlands has received cross party support from members of The Highland Council’s Transport, Environmental and Community (TEC) Services Committee. A number of measures to adopt zero tolerance including extending the powers of Community Wardens to issue fines were overwhelmingly approved by members including: zero tolerance on littering will be carried out with a degree of discretion; additional staff will be authorised to enforce the law relating to litter and fly-tipping; Waste Management and Environmental Health staff carry out joint enforcement days; the preparation and publication of a calendar of enforcement days on the Council’s website www.highland.gov.uk; and the Council encourages and supports local communities to organise events aimed at keeping their communities free of litter and improving the overall environment.15/5/2013

Food for thought
Scottish schools will be providing more food education for pupils thanks to a £1 million fund launched by Scottish government.. Supporting the aims of Curriculum for Excellence, the Food for Thought Education Fund will help pupils learn about all aspects of food.

Gaelic Classes take off in Caithness
A series of new Gaelic classes have taken off in Caithness and attendances are much higher than expected. The new purpose made course for beginners and intermediate learners of the language in the county has been well supported in Wick since it started in the Pulteney Centre at the end of March with 19 registered attendees.Search Our Site
