Washing your hands is one of the most effective ways of reducing the spread of infections such as norovirus and flu, according to Scotland’s Chief Medical and Chief Nursing Officer.   Over this winter, there have been 35 deaths from flu and it is estimated that every year up to one quarter of the population may be affected by an episode of norovirus.

The launch of the Caithness Lymphoedema Support Group
Tuesday14th May, 7 pm – 9 pm, North Highland Cancer Information and Support Centre, 5a High Street, Thurso.   Do you live with lymphoedema? Do you know someone who does? The NHS Highland Lymphoedema Project is proud to launch a new group in Caithness for people who are living with lymphoedema.

Polling takes place tomorrow in the Landward Caithness by-election
Tomorrow (Thursday 2 May 2013) voting begins in the Landward Caithness By-election with polling stations open their doors at 7am and remaining open for people to come and vote until 10pm.   The electorate for the Ward is 8,546.

Measles vaccination programme
All unvaccinated or partially vaccinated Scots aged between 10 and 17 years old are to be offered a vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).   Chief Medical Officer Sir Harry Burns said:“Scotland has an enviable reputation for the success of our childhood vaccination programme, with MMR uptake rates currently 97.1 per cent in children reaching the age of five, well above the WHO target of 95 per cent.

Community renewables powering ahead
The Scottish Government is ahead of schedule in delivering its ambitious targets in community and local ownership of renewable energy projects, Energy Minister, Fergus Ewing has confirmed.   The Scottish Government’s 2020 Routemap for Renewable Energy has a target of generating 500 MW from community renewables by 2020.

POLICE appeal for information in their operation to target rural thefts across Highland area
POLICE are appealing for information from the public to assist them target those responsbile for rural thefts across the Highland area as part of OPERATION ENGAGE.   Within the last few weeks, Police have noted an increase in the number of thefts in the more rural areas of the Highlands.

REDUNDANCY SUPPORT IN THURSO FOR ICETECH STAFF
The Scottish Government’s national redundancy service, PACE, brings partners together to help redundant staff ICETECH staff who have been made redundant are invited to an event to help them move in to further employment or training.   The event takes place on May 3, from 1-3pm in the Pentland Hotel and has been organised by the Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE), the Scottish Government’s initiative for responding to redundancy situations which is led by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in conjunction with other partners.

Householders warned of rogue traders offering tarmacking services
Trading Standards officers of The Highland Council Standards are warning householders to be on their guard if approached at their home and offered tarmacking.   This follows reports being received that rogue traders are operating in the Dornoch area and are informing householders that they are in the area working for The Highland Council and have some tarmac left over.
