We have just added some new photos taken from slightly above Sinclair Girnigoe Castle.   In 1643 George died, as he was predeceased by his son, Lord Berriedale and grandson, the Master of Berriedale, his title and debts passed to his great grandson also George 6th Earl of Caithness.

Record participation in higher education
Participation in higher education among young Scots has reached a record high according to figures released today by the Scottish Funding Council.   The report, which measures participation of initial entrants to higher education, also shows that Scottish participation remains higher than in England, and the participation of 16 to 19 year olds is also at a record high.

Community groups are reminded that the deadline for submitting an expression of interest into the second round of The Highland Council’s Community Challenge Fund is 1 May.   35 groups submitted expressions of interest following the first round of bids on 1 February and six were selected to progress bids for a share of the £1 million set aside by the Council for community projects exploring new ways of delivering services at a local level.

Project aims to bring empty homes back into use across Highland
Three areas in the Highlands are to pilot an initiative by The Highland Council to bring empty properties back into affordable housing use.   The Council’s Housing and Property Service is to initially target the Black Isle, Inverness Central and Nairn, as pilots which together provide a mix of rural and urban locations.

The rebuilding of Wick Council Offices has begun with safety fencing going up all round.   It wil be almost 18 months before staff move back to the new offices having left in January 2013 to relocate temporarily to Girnigoe street.

The Highland Council Ranger programme of events in Caithness kicked off with a family Treasure Hunt at Geise, near Glengolly on Easter Sunday.  More than 100 people turned up to take part in the treasure hunt and to enjoy the lovely walking trails at Geise.

Caithness Wards Information From the 2011 Census Published Recently
Caithness Landward Population - 11355 Landward Caithness is one of our more sparsely populated Wards.  The population grew by 5.2% between 2005 and 2010, perhaps linked to decline in Thurso and Wick as evidence from house sales suggest a drift out of the towns and into the surrounding rural areas.
