The Battle of Altimarlach
The Battle of Altimarlach - 13 July 1680 By Malcolm Caithness 2010 marked the 330th anniversary of the Battle of Altimarlach, near Wick, and as part of our International Clan Gathering that year, the Sinclairs visited the site of the battle to commemorate the event. Not far? Leave the car
A national campaign has been launched to encourage people across Scotland to consider walking or cycling instead of taking short car journeys. The campaign carries the message ‘Not far? Leave the car’ and aims to highlight that making active travel choices for short journeys, rather than using the car, can make the environment cleaner and greener, improving people’s health and wellbeing.6/5/2013
Families to benefit from more childcare
Scottish families will save costs equivalent to around £700 per child, in funded early learning and childcare under proposals by the Scottish Government. Under the Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill, children will be entitled to an additional 125 hours of early learning and childcare a year.6/5/2013

Thrumster Nursery Shoe Box Collection
The children of Thrumster Nursery took part in collecting shoe boxes for the Caithness shoe box appeal a few months ago. They managed to collect a grand total of sixteen boxes which will be distributed to the elderly in the county.5/5/2013

Hand washing stops spread of bugs
Washing your hands is one of the most effective ways of reducing the spread of infections such as norovirus and flu, according to Scotland’s Chief Medical and Chief Nursing Officer. Over this winter, there have been 35 deaths from flu and it is estimated that every year up to one quarter of the population may be affected by an episode of norovirus.2/5/2013

Thursday 2nd May - 5.15pm Dr Magnus Johnson, from the University of Hull’s Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences, will be giving a talk on some of his fascinating research on crustaceans. Measles vaccination programme
All unvaccinated or partially vaccinated Scots aged between 10 and 17 years old are to be offered a vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). Chief Medical Officer Sir Harry Burns said:“Scotland has an enviable reputation for the success of our childhood vaccination programme, with MMR uptake rates currently 97.1 per cent in children reaching the age of five, well above the WHO target of 95 per cent.27/4/2013
Community renewables powering ahead
The Scottish Government is ahead of schedule in delivering its ambitious targets in community and local ownership of renewable energy projects, Energy Minister, Fergus Ewing has confirmed. The Scottish Government’s 2020 Routemap for Renewable Energy has a target of generating 500 MW from community renewables by 2020.26/4/2013

The local Caithness raido station Caithness FM celebrated 15 years of broadcasting to the county. Transmitting from their little studio at Ormlie in Thurso the many volunteer presenters have kept the music and requests flowing.26/4/2013
