Brough Community Harbour Project For many years the slipway at Brough served as the landing point for supplies to Dunnet Head lighthouse. Battered by winter storms, the slipway was increasingly at risk of collapsing.22/5/2013

Funding to improve safety for pupils walking and cycling to school
Both Canisbay Primary in Caithness and Edderton Primary in Sutherland have been awarded funding to improve safety for pupils walking and cycling to and from school. The Cycling, Walking and Safer Streets (CWSS) Programme is funded by the Scottish Government with �237,000 available in Highland.20/5/2013
National campaign calls for support from Highland to listen to kids in care
The Highland Council has joined a national campaign to give a stronger voice to children and young people in care and leaving care by tackling discrimination head on. Six looked after children from the Highlands, aged 14-17, signed up to the campaign at the National Young Persons Conference in Edinburgh today (Tuesday).19/5/2013

Highland Council takes zero tolerance stance on littering
A zero tolerance approach to littering in the Highlands has received cross party support from members of The Highland Council�s Transport, Environmental and Community (TEC) Services Committee. A number of measures to adopt zero tolerance including extending the powers of Community Wardens to issue fines were overwhelmingly approved by members including: zero tolerance on littering will be carried out with a degree of discretion; additional staff will be authorised to enforce the law relating to litter and fly-tipping; Waste Management and Environmental Health staff carry out joint enforcement days; the preparation and publication of a calendar of enforcement days on the Council�s website www.highland.gov.uk; and the Council encourages and supports local communities to organise events aimed at keeping their communities free of litter and improving the overall environment.15/5/2013

Gaelic Classes take off in Caithness
A series of new Gaelic classes have taken off in Caithness and attendances are much higher than expected. The new purpose made course for beginners and intermediate learners of the language in the county has been well supported in Wick since it started in the Pulteney Centre at the end of March with 19 registered attendees.14/5/2013
HLF�s new First World War grant programme opens
Today, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) is launching First World War: then and now, a �6million small grants programme to help communities mark the Centenary of the First World War. HLF is making at least �1million available per year for six years until 2019.14/5/2013
Young voter registration
A young voter registration form that will give young people the right to have their say on the opportunity of independence for Scotland has been endorsed after independent testing, Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed. The Young Voter Registration form was developed by the Scottish Government to enable eligible 15-year-olds to register for the forthcoming vote on independence, as part of the Scottish Independence Referendum (Franchise) Bill.14/5/2013

Free vitamin supplements for children, pregnant women and new mothers on low incomes will now be more widely available to encourage greater uptake. Self-Directed Support Consultation Roadshow
The Scottish Government has just launched a 12 week consultation on the Statutory Guidance and Regulations which will accompany the Social Care (Self-directed Support) (Scotland) Act 2013.
