The Highland Seashore Roadshow Rolls into Nairn - Caithness 24th August

4th July 2013

A fun packed day of seaside adventures, exploring and games with the Highland Seashore Project and The Highland Councils Countryside Rangers takes place in Nairn on the 19 July when the Seashore Roadshow rolls in to town.

Nairn Central Beach is well known for its stretch of beautiful, deep gold sand, dunes and the fantastic links which is great for kicking a ball or flying a kite. On the 19th July the area is being turned into fun central, with a marquee hosting all kind of seashore themed activities including face painting, seashore puppets, beach art and kite making.

For those who want to stretch their legs there will be a beach stroll at low tide with one of the Highland Seashore projects seashore experts. Well known story teller Bob Pegg will be weaving tales all afternoon in his own magical way. Displays and activities will be given from the RSPB, Wild Things Outdoor Education Charity, the Moray Firth Partnership and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Scotland.

The Highland Seashore Project is working with The Highland Council and local community groups to bring coastal roadshows, full of family fun, to venues all around the Highlands. Each Roadshow will be different, based on the enthusiasm of local people and the spectacular nature of the coasts themselves. One thing they all have in common is a love of the seashore and a full timetable of activities for all ages.

The Project was launched in February, 2013 and it is run by the Highland Biodiversity Partnership. It aims to encourage understanding and appreciation of our delicate seashores and the life that depends upon them.

Project Co-ordinator Janet Ullman said This is the first roadshow in a series of six family orientated events this year. The Highland Seashore Project aims to encourage local people to discover the magnificent coastlines the Highlands possess and about the wide variety of life that clings to those shores. We are already thinking about events for next year, so if you or your community want to get something happening at your local coast give me a call.

We have had a great start to the project with lots of support and local enthusiasm. The Councils team of Rangers have been vital to the Roadshows. They have been brilliant partners getting the Roadshows together with the Seashore Project, using their numerous skills and knowledge of local coasts.

Chairman of The Councils Planning, Environment and Development Committee, Councillor Thomas Prag said: This is just the sort of partnership project that really catches peoples imagination. It doesnt get much better than learning more about the plants and animals that flourish along our shores in a very interactive way while having fun on the sands of a great beach. It sounds like every kids dream so I am sure everyone who comes along will have a really great time.

There will be five other Roadshows running over the summer so look out for them:
24th July, Traigh Beach near Arisaig

6th August, Clachtoll Beach, West Sutherland

10th August, Broadford, Isle of Sky

24th August, Sea Drift Centre, Dunnet Bay, Caithness

The Nairn Roadshow starts at 11am and finishes at 4pm. Car parking is available at the main car parks for the beach, with toilets at the Links. There is a cafe on site.
