Consultation seeks views on specified limit for new drug driving offence
A consultation seeking views on setting limits for a new drug driving offence in Scotland has been published.   The UK Government’s Crime and Courts Act 2013 introduced a new offence to bring drug driving into line with drink driving by making it an offence to drive under the influence of drugs over a specified limit.

Police offer advice regarding considerate driving during the summer months
Police Scotland Highland and Islands Division are offering advice regarding considerate driving to all road users during the summer months in an attempt to reduce frustration and collisions on the area's roads.   Police are urging all road users to be mindful of other drivers and riders throughout the summer months when the area sees an increase of traffic especially holiday makers, who are unfamiliar with the region.

The Highland Seashore Roadshow Rolls into Nairn - Caithness 24th August
A fun packed day of seaside adventures, exploring and games with the Highland Seashore Project and The Highland Council’s Countryside Rangers takes place in Nairn on the 19 July when the Seashore Roadshow rolls in to town.   Nairn Central Beach is well known for its stretch of beautiful, deep gold sand, dunes and the fantastic links which is great for kicking a ball or flying a kite.

Charging for concessionary places on school transport - Starts August
Charging for concessionary places on school transport The Highland Council is introducing charging for concessionary places on school transport from the start of the new school session on 20 August.   This charge will apply where there are seats available on school transport contracts for pupils who do not qualify for free transport on the grounds of distance, road safety or additional support needs.

Police praise young people in Highlands and Islands in recent Campaign Against Violence day of action.   Police Scotland Highland and Islands Division are praising youths in a recent Campaign Against Violence (CAV) day that focussed on underage drinking, last Friday (28 June 2013), the first day of the school summer holidays.

Roll out of Highland Food Hygiene Information Scheme
More consumers in Highland will now have a way to find out how well local food caterers and retailers are performing thanks to the complete roll-out of the Food Hygiene Information Scheme across the area.   The Highland Council is one of the 32 Scottish local authorities taking part in the Scheme.

Highland Council, along with its Partners, have signed up to an Armed Forces Community Covenant for Highland.   The Community Covenant is a voluntary statement of support between a civilian community and its local Armed Forces community.

Marie Curie To Set Up New Fund Raising Group In Thurso
I am writing to call on all Thurso people to help Marie Curie Cancer Care to set up a new volunteer Fundraising Group for Thurso.   Fundraising Groups make an enormous difference locally by helping to raise the vital funds we need so that Marie Curie Nurses can continue to provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes.

New patient safety initiative on medicines launched Thumbnail for article : New patient safety initiative on medicines launched
A new patient safety initiative focussing on medicines and dehydration has been launched by NHS Highland in a bid to let patients know about the risks dehydration can cause when taking certain medicines.   New patient information cards detailing which medicines should be temporarily stopped are being distributed to pharmacies, GP Practices and Hospitals across Highland.

Two communities successful in bid for Council’s Challenge Fund
Two Highland groups have responded to The Highland Council’s ‘Community Challenge’ and will be providing enhanced services for their communities at no greater cost than the present Council-run provision.   Kyle and Lochalsh Community Trust and Fort Augustus Community Company are the first two organisations in the Highlands to benefit through applications to the Council’s Community Challenge Fund.

Wind farm wind falls should bring socio-economic benefits to Caithness
Youth employment opportunities, tourism initiatives, improved transport links and support for businesses came out top in a recent survey to find out what wind farm windfalls should be spent on in Caithness in the future.   Not surprisingly, the Caithness Conversation Community Profile suggests that a high percentage of the funds should be spent on communities nearest the wind farm but the idea of setting aside a smaller pot of funds for county-wide initiatives was also supported.
