Funding Opportunity - Community Covenant Grant Scheme
Highland Council, along with its Partners, have signed up to an Armed Forces Community Covenant for Highland.   The Community Covenant is a voluntary statement of support between a civilian community and its local Armed Forces community.

Marie Curie To Set Up New Fund Raising Group In Thurso
I am writing to call on all Thurso people to help Marie Curie Cancer Care to set up a new volunteer Fundraising Group for Thurso.   Fundraising Groups make an enormous difference locally by helping to raise the vital funds we need so that Marie Curie Nurses can continue to provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes.

Start of celebrations as 65 Scots give thanks.   Sixty five Scots whose lives have been transformed by the NHS joined forces today to mark its 65th anniversary.

A new patient safety initiative focussing on medicines and dehydration has been launched by NHS Highland in a bid to let patients know about the risks dehydration can cause when taking certain medicines.   New patient information cards detailing which medicines should be temporarily stopped are being distributed to pharmacies, GP Practices and Hospitals across Highland.

Two communities successful in bid for Council’s Challenge Fund
Two Highland groups have responded to The Highland Council’s ‘Community Challenge’ and will be providing enhanced services for their communities at no greater cost than the present Council-run provision.   Kyle and Lochalsh Community Trust and Fort Augustus Community Company are the first two organisations in the Highlands to benefit through applications to the Council’s Community Challenge Fund.

Wind farm wind falls should bring socio-economic benefits to Caithness
Youth employment opportunities, tourism initiatives, improved transport links and support for businesses came out top in a recent survey to find out what wind farm windfalls should be spent on in Caithness in the future.   Not surprisingly, the Caithness Conversation Community Profile suggests that a high percentage of the funds should be spent on communities nearest the wind farm but the idea of setting aside a smaller pot of funds for county-wide initiatives was also supported.

Babies will begin to be protected against rotavirus from today 1st July
Rotavirus vaccine programme begins Protection against severe diarrhoea and vomiting for babies and young children.   All babies in Scotland born on or after May 1 this year are being offered vaccination against rotavirus, a severe diarrhoea and vomiting bug affecting in babies and young children that can lead to dehydration and hospital treatment.

CASTLE SINCLAIR GIRNIGOE, CAITHNESS Much has been written on the history of this spectacular ruin dramatically situated on cliffs projecting into Sinclair Bay about three miles north of Wick.  The books basically tell us that this icon the County were two castles – one being the tower house built between 1476 and 1496 which was called Girnigoe and the other called Sinclair was built on land to the west in 1606.

By 2014 Scottish retailers will charge a minimum of 5p per bag in a bid to reduce carrier bag use.   Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead announced the move today which follows a consultation that was held last year to gauge public opinion.

A group of disabled local young people from Caithness were invited to the Scottish Parliament to attend, ‘Young Scot: Agents of Change’ parliamentary reception to discuss how services can be improved to support the needs of disabled young people in their local area.   A group of disabled young people aged 16-21 years from Caithness have been involved in the national project, ‘Young Scot: Agents of Change.
