Scottish Government Failing NHS in the Highlands and Islands
A key target for the treatment of cancer patients was not met in the last quarter, figures have revealed.   The latest statistics showed 94.4% of people started cancer treatment within 62 days of being urgently referred because it was suspected they had the disease - just below the target of 95% and down from 95.8% in the previous quarter.

Thanks to The Highland Council’s Countryside Rangers live pictures of a Golden Eagle nest can now be seen at the Assynt Visitor Centre in Lochinver, Sutherland which is located within the North West Highlands Geopark.   A tiny CCTV camera is perched on a steep crag in a remote Highland glen in Assynt and the picture is beamed nearly 20km to the Visitor Centre.

The Highland Council is consulting with local disability and access groups and the taxi trade to find out their views on a change of licensing policy that could lead to an increase in the numbers of wheelchair accessible vehicles in the Highlands.   At present, in Highland, only around 5% of the overall taxi and private hire car fleet are wheelchair accessible.

HIE launches major Gaelic research project
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is leading a partnership project to research the ways in which Gaelic delivers economic and social value within the region and for Scotland, and how that impact can be maximised.   HIE has commissioned DC Research to gather detailed information from businesses, communities and social enterprises which are currently using Gaelic as an asset.

Committee calls for local authorities to teach one foreign language from primary through to secondary school
Local authorities should ensure one language is taught across primary schools and into secondary schools according to a report published today (Friday 21 June) by the European and External Relations Committee.   The report endorses the goal of teaching primary school children two languages in addition to their mother tongue.

Organisers of the twentieth Highland Archaeology Festival are looking for more contributors to share their interesting sites and stories at this autumn’s Festival.   Plans for this year’s festival are now underway and organisers are hoping for a bumper programme of Highland-wide events to mark its twentieth year.

Scottish pensioners offered greater certainty
Pensioners in Scotland would benefit from stronger safeguards than their counterparts in the rest of the UK following a vote for independence, Finance Secretary John Swinney announced today.   Speaking at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) Pensions Conference, Mr Swinney announced the Scottish Government’s intention to adopt a single tier state pension (STP) from 2016, to uprate it by the highest of earnings growth, inflation or 2.5 per cent, the so called “triple lock”; and to maintain the triple lock for the Basic State Pension beyond 2015.

Launch of Allotment Site Design Guide
A guide, which will assist local authorities and gardening groups design and cultivate allotment sites, has been launched.   Planning Minister Derek Mackay officially unveiled the Allotment Site Design Guide at the Scottish Allotment and Garden Society’s (SAGS) annual conference today (June 15).
