Highland Archives launch Virtual Doors Open Days
Each September "Doors Open Days" events take place across the country, giving the public behind-the-scenes access to some of Scotland's most fascinating buildings and organisations.   For High Life Highland's Archive Service, which looks after historic Highland documents dating from the 1200s to the present day, Doors Open Day is an annual highlight which sees dozens of people visit to learn more about the work of the service and its fascinating collections.

The John o' Groats Brewery has provided signs to mark the start/finish of the John o' Groats Trail just outside the brewery location near the harbour in the village.   The John o' Groats Trail is a charitable project to develop a coastal trail in Caithness and Sutherland with additional links in Easter Ross to connect to Inverness, allowing a continuous trail walk to or from as far away as Land's End.

Thurso Grows benefits from Caithness Community Payback
Thurso Grows recently took receipt of two picnic benches specifically designed for use by wheelchair users.   The benches were fully constructed by the Caithness Community Payback Team in their Wick workshop by clients who had been sentenced to carry out unpaid work by Wick Sheriff Court.

Tips For Avoiding Accidental Damage
Households are being reminded to be careful at home following a 46% increase in claims for accidental damage between March and June 2020.   Halifax Home Insurance received 1,318 claims for the risk in March compared to 1,920 in June.

School lets update
All Highland Council school lets will remain suspended to assist in the Government's goal in suppressing the coronavirus.  We will review this position in October and will reopen the lets booking process, in line with national Covid-19 guidance, when it is deemed safe to do so.

Wick Paths Group will be returning to work on upgrading the Coghill Bridges at Wick Riverside this weekend - Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th August and the bridge will be closed to the public both days to enable the work to proceed safely.   The group have already upgraded the smaller of the two bridges, this involved replacing rotten timbers and railing supports and laying a non slip fibreglass walking surface.

As schools return in Scotland, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is reminding working parents they could save up to £2,000 per child per year to pay towards after-school clubs and other childcare services.   Around 110,000 families in Scotland are eligible for Tax-Free Childcare, which can cut thousands of pounds off childcare bills.

Green Health Packs have been bagged and are being distributed to community groups in a project that will bring environmental benefits across Caithness while also boosting people's wellbeing.   Caithness Voluntary Group has assembled 450 packs with help from volunteers and staff at Pulteneytown People's Project in Wick, while Caithness Rural Transport has helped get them distributed.

Support For Working Families Affected By Coronavirus Given An Extra Boost
Families who benefit from government funded childcare support were given a boost today as the Government announced that they would not lose out due to COVID-19.   Working parents or carers, who are eligible for Tax-Free Childcare but have temporarily fallen below the minimum income requirement as a result of the pandemic, will continue to receive financial support until 31 October 2020 Critical workers who may exceed the income threshold for the 2020-21 tax year, as a result of working more to play a vital role in tackling the coronavirus pandemic, will continue to receive support this tax year.
