Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service Winter Home Safety
During a prolonged cold spell there may be an increased risk from fire due to the use of heaters, open fire and wood burning stoves which haven’t been used recently or are not properly maintained.   It is a busy time for the Fire Service with 5000 fires caused by faulty electric blankets and around 12000 chimney fires each year in the UK.

Householders reminded of recycling service for electrical items that have lost their spark With Christmas coming householders are being given a timely reminder that they can recycle all their old electrical items at their local recycling centre.   Waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling (WEEE) has been available at all of the Council’s recycling centres since the start of 2010.

New Projects To Help Heat Old Homes
More than 2,200 old, cold properties across Scotland are to be transformed into warm, environmentally friendly homes which are easier and cheaper to heat.   New Scottish Government investment of £3.5 million has been allocated to 19 projects across Scotland, for the installation of energy efficiency measures such as solid wall insulation, double glazing and central heating in older homes.

Cashback Funding Reaches £50m
Youth organisations will receive a CashBack Christmas present of £1.5 million, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill announced today.   The first tranche of £5.6 million seized by the Crown from Abbot Group Limited under the Proceeds of Crime Act will go to a consortium of six national youth organisations led by Youth Scotland.

The Caithness Countryside Volunteers spent last Sunday morning building bird boxes at their last event of the year.  A total of 14 standard bird boxes were built at Seadrift, The Highland Councils wildlife centre at Dunnet Bay.

More Drink Drivers Than Ever Caught
Head of Northern Constabulary’s Road Policing Unit has expressed disappointment at the 13 drivers who chose to put their own and the lives of others at risk by drink driving despite numerous warnings.   The 13 were detected by Police during week one of the 2012/13 ACPOS Festive Safety Campaign, which focuses primarily on drink and drug driving.

Assistance to Communities as part of Council’s winter resilience campaign
The Highland Council has written to all community councils to let them know that assistance will be available to any communities who wish to help clear snow and ice from local footpaths.   Following bad weather last winter a number of Community Councils approached the council to enquire about taking action in their own areas to clear snow and ice from footpaths as and when needed.

CAITHNESS sisters Seren Whyte 23 and Elise Whyte 21 have completed the LeJog Land’s End to John O’ Groats classic car reliability challenge, in their Mini Cooper.  They were among the first arrivals to complete the popular route and met up, today, with other drivers who stopped off at Wick's former Haldanes car park where their cars were driven onto low-loaders for the return journey south.

New Scheme to Tackle Litter at Schools In Highland
The Highland Council awarded £24,000 to trial new project to prevent littering in the Highlands.   A new project led by The Highland Council to prevent littering around 10 secondary schools in the Highlands is set to take place thanks to funding awarded by Zero Waste Scotland, the Scottish Government-backed body set up to help Scotland reduce waste, recycle more, and use resources sustainably.
