Help Wick Rotary Club Recycle Bicycles

Do you have a bicycle you no longer need? Then you can help some poor people in third world countries to get mobile.   Wick Rotary club are collecting old bicycles to refurbish and send off to people who can really use some help with their transport.  

Drop a Glass Size in 2013

A campaign encouraging women to ‘Drop a Glass Size’ in 2013 has been launched today by Health Secretary Alex Neil.   As part of the campaign, which also includes a national roadshow, a new ‘drinking mirror’ smart phone app has been developed to show people the shocking affects of regularly drinking too much.

Funding Opportunity - Comic Relief - Local Communities Programme

COMIC RELIEF "LOCAL COMMUNITIES" PROGRAMME Grants of up to £10,000 are available through the Comic Relief "Local Communities" programme.   The programme, which is being managed locally by Community Foundations, support projects that benefit people who are excluded or disadvantaged through low income, rural or social isolation, age, disabilities, race, sexuality or gender.  

New Anti Litter Campaign For Schools and Communities

Schools and communities gear up for the launch of new anti-littering campaign.   A new anti-littering campaign kicks off in Highland next week with 10 secondary schools signed up to take part in the first project of its kind that will bring pupils and the local community together to tackle littering.  

Launch of Council Community Challenge Fund

In a move aimed at encouraging community empowerment, The Highland Council today (Thursday 3rd January2 013) launched its new Community Challenge Fund, which will provide £1 million each year of recurring spending for community projects exploring new ways of delivering services at a local level.   Community councils, community groups and establish social enterprises are invited to express their interest via a one-page form which is available from the home page of the Council’s web site: www.highland.gov.uk The Council is open to ideas on how groups could:- 1.  

Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Gain FREE Computers

History detectives, silver surfers, internet trainees, primary pupils and vulnerable youngsters are all benefiting from a project to give new life to redundant computers.   The renovation has seen over 250 PCs, laptops, tablets and printers saved from landfill and put to use by charities and community groups across the Highlands.  

Flame Shell Reef Discovery

A huge colony of an elusive and brightly coloured shellfish species – numbering at least 100 million – has been revealed in coastal waters in the west of Scotland.   The Marine Scotland commissioned survey of Loch Alsh, a sea inlet between Skye and the Scottish mainland, has uncovered an extensive bed of flame shells.
