Schoolgirl Martha Payne and Olympic Gold medal winner Andy Murray in race for the title as charity for Scots in London announces shortlist for Scot of the Year 2012 ScotsCare, the charity for Scots in London, has announced the shortlist for Scot of the Year 2012.   Schoolgirl Martha Payne, famous for her blog about school dinners, which then grew into a fundraising campaign which has raised in excess of £100,000 to help schools in Malawi, is currently in the lead.

Funding Opportunity - Tesco Charitable Funds
The current round for Children's Welfare and Children's Education (Including Special Needs Schools) closes on 31st January 2013.   Community Awards The Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme provides one-off donations of between £500 and £4,000 to registered charities and not for profit organisations who are working on local projects that support children and their education and welfare, elderly people and adults and children with disabilities.

Scotland’s war memorials will be cleaned and restored in readiness for the anniversary of the First World War through a new fund being made available to communities across the country.   The additional £1 million for the Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund - announced by First Minister Alex Salmond today - will pay for the upgrade and maintenance of memorials in villages, towns and cities in Scotland that pay tribute to those who gave their lives during both world wars and other conflicts.

Deadline approaches for Highland groups to apply for Community Covenant funding
Community groups and organisations across the Highlands have until Friday 1 February to bid for funding from a £30 million grant scheme which is operated by the Ministry of Defence to finance local projects which strengthen the ties between members of the Armed Forces community and local communities.   Councillor Carolyn Caddick, The Highland Council’s Armed Forces and Veterans’ Champion said: “I strongly encourage organisations and community groups who are looking for funding support for their projects to get their applications before the deadline.

3rd Sector Early Intervention Fund ending and new Communities and Families fund will replace it.   Applications must be submitted by 5.00pm, 1st February 2013 The Unified Voluntary Sector Fund, CLD HQ Funds and Early Years Early Action Fund in their present format will come to an end at the end of this current financial year (2012-13).

Caithness In World War Two - Highland Archive Centre
The Highland Archive Centre has been investigating what has appeared in the press for Caithness during world War Two and made copies of its research from the local papers available on their web site.   They have now reached week 20 so it is worth a look to see what they have already compiled from 1939 to 21st January 1940.
