Viking Sites Lead the Way in Global Treasure Hunt
Highland Council are part of an innovative new tourism initiative linking sites in Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Shetland, Orkney, Highland, and the Isle of Man.   The Thing Sites GeoTour, which launched last week, the first outside the American Continent and has been developed as part of the EU Northern Periphery Programme funded THING Project.

A new local radio service comes to Lochbroom
The long-established Lochbroom FM radio station based in Ullapool has linked up with Gairloch-based Two Lochs Radio to provide a new local radio service for the area.  At the same time Lochbroom FM will continue to develop an online Internet-only radio service from its Ullapool studio.

Snaring Legislation To Come Into Force
All snaring operators will need to undergo a training course and to use a unique identification number on their snares under new legislation.   The change in legislation applies to all snares and snaring operators who currently use snares as a means of pest and predator control including farmers, crofters, gamekeepers, and greenkeepers on golf courses.

Minister to give evidence on ash dieback disease.
The Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee will take evidence on the management of ash dieback disease in Scotland from the Scottish Government Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Paul Wheelhouse, at its meeting on Wednesday 28 November.   Convener of the Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee Rob Gibson MSP said, “Ash Dieback is a serious disease threatening ash trees in Scotland and the UK.

Community and third sector organisations are being invited by The Highland Council to submit applications for the Council’s 2013 Deprived Area Fund.   Applications will be welcomed for projects that will help communities to develop activities aimed at improving quality of life and regenerating communities.

Don’t Give Fire A Home This Winter
A map showing where house fires took place across Scotland over the last year has been unveiled at the launch of an annual fire safety campaign.   The ‘Scotland’s Hottest Postcodes’ map reveals that while the highest concentration of house fires in 2011-12 were centred around built-up areas such as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee, house fires affect homes throughout Scotland.

A fire that broke out at Ormlie Industrial Estate, Thurso, Caithness about midday on Saturday 3rd November 2012 was brought under control by firefighters from Thurso and Wick.   Four tenders were at the scene of the fire.
