Caithness Members of The Highland Council have set aside £30,000 from their Ward Discretionary Budgets to let the local community once again decide for themselves which projects are needed in their area. Whether locals want to organise a dance for young people, a healthy living project, a crime prevention idea, a lunch club for older residents, a community art project, the only limit is their imagination.22/9/2016
Highland Independent Councillors Launch New Web Site
www.highland-independent-councillors.org The majority of councillors in Highland are independents with no party allegiances. Once they were the majority like Shetland and Orkney but the new voting system with multi-member wards reduced their numbers giving political parties more representation.

Highlands and Islands Regional MSP debates Domestic Abuse in Parliament
Highlands& Islands Regional MSP (Includes Moray and Argyll & Bute) Rhoda Grant, has for some time been at the forefront of the debate on all aspects of Domestic Abuse and in particular the support and services offered to victims. In recent months she has proposed and written to the Cabinet Secretary for Justice, on the need for dedicated Domestic Abuse Courts.19/9/2016
North MSP raises concerns about NHS 24 service
Highlands & Islands (Including Moray) MSP, Rhoda Grant, has written to the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Shona Robinson, about her concerns in relation to the level of care applied to the service provided to constituents in the Highlands & Islands region by NHS 24. This follows contact she has had from the son of an elderly constituent resident within the region.18/9/2016
Improving oral health
Dentists and their patients are being asked to give their views on a new plan to further improve Scotland's oral health. Aileen Campbell, Minister for Public Health and Sport, met dentists and patients as she launched a consultation at East Craigs Dental Practice in Edinburgh today.

Over 5000 Kids Seen By Highland Rangers So Far In 2016
Over 5000 North Highland pupils have undertaken a project with the Highland Council's Rangers so far this year. It has been a really busy year in the North Highlands for The Highland Council's Countryside Ranger team.

Caithness Heart Support Group Donate Equipment
THE Thurso and Halkirk joint GP practice was delighted to receive much-needed replacement items for the surgery. An examination couch, heavy-duty, electronic scales and four pulse oxometers, were funded by Caithness Heart Support Group.

Volunteers Improve Access Along the Caithness Coast
Members of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers teamed up with the Friends of the John O'Groats Trail on Sunday morning to improve access along a section of coastline in the Latheron area, cutting back dense gorse and building stiles to improve access for walkers. The works on Sunday contribute to establishing a long distance walking route from Inverness to John O'Groats and other work days are planned in the future.

Recycle Week 2016- Get involved and dont let a good thing go to waste
Recycle Week 2016, which is taking place from the 12th to the 18th of September 2016, is set to see a whole host of action taking place across Scotland, with The Highland Council's Waste Team lending its support to the campaign and encouraging others to follow suit. The week, which is coordinated by Zero Waste Scotland, aims to get everyone in Scotland recycling more by raising awareness of its benefits and promoting easy ways to do more.12/9/2016

Women Against State Pension Inequality are holding a national Day of Action on Friday 16th September 2016. The Caithness WASPI group will be actively campaigning in Wick and Thurso to raise awareness of the changes to women's pensions.

Archaeology Festival to showcase historic past of Highlands
The high point of the year for celebrating the local heritage of the Highlands starts on Friday 30th September. For two weeks, the Highland Archaeology Festival will offer a range of walks, talks, workshops, exhibitions, the annual conference and other events for all ages throughout the Highlands.

Wicks Summer Reading Challenge Certificates Presented
Children from the Wick area who joined in the Summer Reading challenge at Wick library were recently presented with certificates to acknowledge the completion of the challenge over the summer period. Councillors Neil Macdonald, Bill Fernie, David Bremner and Gillian Coghill were on hand to congratulate the youngsters and hand over a certificate and a medal for their efforts.

Self Directed Support Information Days
Thursday 13th October 2016 is the day to head to the Pulteney Centre in Wick and other places on other dates in Highland if you want to find out more about support or training for making choices about Self Directed Support. Self Directed Support is available for adults and children and young people who have been assessed as requiring care or support.

Bags of Help Greenspace Funding Applications Now Open
Do you know a local greenspace that needs improving in Highland Council? Do you want to run activities in your greenspaces or parks? Local authorities, community groups and organisations can all apply for Tesco Bags of Help funding! Great news - the Tesco Bags of Help grant scheme is now permanently open for applications.
