Wick High Schools Open Day, Saturday 10th December 2016

To mark the conclusion of our proud 106 year history in our current building, and to look forward to the bright future in our new home, Wick High School would like to invite you to an Open Day in ‘the original' Wick High School on Saturday 10th December 2016 from 10am-3pm.   During this time we will open the doors of this historic building to the general public for the final time in its incredible history.  

Public Vote on Cash For Local Groups In Caithness

On Saturday 19th November members of the public voted on which groups who had applied for funds would be successful.   The event was held at Puleteney Centre, Wick and once again the hall was full for the third event.  

CHAT calls for radical infrastructure improvements in wake of major report into Caithness maternity services

The long-awaited report of Public Health Scotland (PHS) into maternity services at Caithness General Hospital was launched today, and recommends that the Henderson Maternity Unit moves to a midwife led model (CMU).  The Report concludes that Caithness does not have the population to support an obstetrician, and that the presence of specialists without the backup of intensive care facilities or a paediatrician creates unnecessary risk factors for patients.  

Caithness WASPI Meetings

Caithness WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) are holding meetings on Tuesday 15th November 2016 at 6.30 pm in the Pentland Hotel, Thurso and Wednesday 16th November 2016 at 6.30 pm in the Norseman Hotel, Wick.   The aim of the meetings are to give an update on the progress made so far in particular the Crowdfunding campaign which has raised over £100K for legal action to secure a better deal for 1950s born women unfairly affected by State Pension Age changes in the 1995 & 2011 Pensions Acts..

Following the initial bidding process 15 projects now have a chance to put their idea to the public vote .  There is £30,000.00 on offer with applications received totalling £40,464.00.

Bags of Help is Tesco's local community grant scheme where the money raised from the 5p bag levy in Tesco stores is being used to fund thousands of community projects across the UK.  The projects must meet the criteria of promoting community participation in the development and use of outdoor spaces.  

Big Lottery - Community Assets - Apply Any Time

Grants from £10,000 to £1 million to create strong and resilient communities through assets.   Through Community Assets grants, we aim to empower people to create strong and resilient communities by helping them to acquire, manage or develop assets such as buildings or land.  

Scotlands rarest fish finds safe haven in southern loch

A small freshwater fish, whose habitat had reduced to just two locations in England, is successfully surviving following its introduction to Loch Skeen near Moffat.   Conservation charity, The National Trust for Scotland, has been working with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and experts from the University of Glasgow to establish a thriving population of the fish in the loch, which sits in the Trust's Grey Mare's Tail nature reserve.  

Your Cash Your Caithness - deadline for entries approaches

Local groups in Caithness are reminded that the closing date for Your Cash Your Caithness applications is drawing near and to be in with a chance of receiving a share of £30,000 forms need to be received by 5.00pm on Monday 31st October.   Caithness Members of The Highland Council have set aside £30,000.00 from their Ward Discretionary Budget to let the local community decide for themselves which projects are needed in their area.
