10/6/2024A New Book About The Ulbster Burial Ground
Caithness Family History Society held a very successful book launch at the Old Smiddy Inn, Thrumster on the morning of Saturday 25th May. The book is Fiona Begg's "Ulbster Burial Ground," which contains photos and transcriptions of all visible gravestones, plus some extra family information about the people recorded on the stones.[History]

The Caithness Broch project group have made an exciting announcement on their Facebook page about another momentous step in their plans to build a new broch. After a lengthy search for the perfect site, we are pleased to announce that we have identified an area north of Latheron known as Flygla as our preferred site for our 'Big Broch Build'.[History]

13/8/2019Archaeology Dig to start at Iron Age site in Caithness
The University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute, in partnership with the Yarrows Heritage Trust, are preparing for a fourth season of excavation at the Burn of Swartigill in Thrumster, Caithness, Scotland. Previous seasons of excavation at the site have uncovered a complex of Iron Age structures, which are providing an important window into Iron Age society away from the monumental architecture of the Brochs.[History]

Recruiting volunteers has become increasingly difficult these last few years, and with the 1st May looming we are realising that we will possibly be struggling this season with who we have; two of our regulars have opted to become ‘standby', meaning they are only able to help on an emergency basis.[History]

Talks have taken place on the possibility of reopening Thurso's Caithness Horizons which closed last week due to financial problems. The operators of the museum and art gallery said increasing running costs and reduced income had made the running of the site "unsustainable".[History]
