CARNEGIE CHALLENGE FUND The Carnegie UK Trust has announced the launch of its Carnegie Challenge Fund. The Carnegie Challenge is a fund to enable not-for-profit organisations to put on a high calibre debate to raise the profile and impact of a conference or event which they are organising.

CLIMATE CHALLENGE FUND (SCOTLAND) Keep Scotland Beautiful, has announced that the next deadline for applications to the Climate challenge fund is the 5th April 2013. Through the Climate Challenge Fund, Communities across Scotland can apply for grants of up to �150,000 per year to help reduce their carbon footprint and become more energy efficient.

COMIC RELIEF "LOCAL COMMUNITIES" PROGRAMME Grants of up to �10,000 are available through the Comic Relief "Local Communities" programme. The programme, which is being managed locally by Community Foundations, support projects that benefit people who are excluded or disadvantaged through low income, rural or social isolation, age, disabilities, race, sexuality or gender.

HEALTHY HEARTS GRANTS Heart Research UK has announced the next funding round under its Healthy Heart Grants Scheme opened on the 1st January 2013. Heart Research UK Healthy Heart Grants support innovative projects designed to promote heart health and to prevent or reduce the risks of heart disease in specific groups or communities.

Schools and communities gear up for the launch of new anti-littering campaign. A new anti-littering campaign kicks off in Highland next week with 10 secondary schools signed up to take part in the first project of its kind that will bring pupils and the local community together to tackle littering.

Police disappointed with the increased number detected drink driving during month campaign. Northern Constabulary report disappointment in the increased number of drivers detected driving under the influence of alcohol during the month-long ACPOS festive safety campaign, which ended yesterday.

In a move aimed at encouraging community empowerment, The Highland Council today (Thursday 3rd January2 013) launched its new Community Challenge Fund, which will provide �1 million each year of recurring spending for community projects exploring new ways of delivering services at a local level. History detectives, silver surfers, internet trainees, primary pupils and vulnerable youngsters are all benefiting from a project to give new life to redundant computers. The renovation has seen over 250 PCs, laptops, tablets and printers saved from landfill and put to use by charities and community groups across the Highlands.

A huge colony of an elusive and brightly coloured shellfish species � numbering at least 100 million � has been revealed in coastal waters in the west of Scotland. The Marine Scotland commissioned survey of Loch Alsh, a sea inlet between Skye and the Scottish mainland, has uncovered an extensive bed of flame shells.

Thousands of pupils will leave secondary school this winter with many taking their first steps into employment through Opportunities for All placements. All 16 to 19-year-olds are guaranteed a place in education or training through Opportunities for All.
Public and Schools Solar Observing Activities 2012 During the International Year of Astronomy, Caithness Astronomy Group held numerous public and school events, engaging the local population with the varied science and technology associated with Space and Astronomy. Thanks to funding from the IoP in Scotland and the Dounreay Communities Fund in 2010, Caithness Astronomy Group (CAG) were able to purchase solar observing equipment that provided a new avenue for engaging with the local population that would complement our night time observing events.

The first two successful applications from the Highlands to the Armed Forces Community Covenant have been awarded nearly �5,000 of funding for local community projects. At the end of October Public Sector Partners in the Highlands showed their joint commitment to the Armed Forces by signing an Armed Forces Community Covenant.
