Christmas came early for a number of local organisations when they received cheques from from the Highland Council's Caithness Wards Discretionary Budgets. The cheques were presented by Caithness Members at a ceremony in Wick Town Hall on Monday 17th December 2012.

The Highland Council and NHS Highland are urging people to get a grip of wintry weather conditions by considering purchasing snow and ice grippers to attach to their footwear to help prevent injury from slips and falls. Highland Council has been giving assurance that salt supplies are sufficient, ready and being used to grit priority roads and footways within the resources available according to the Council�s gritting policy.

Officers from the Environmental Health Service at The Highland Council are keen to spread the Christmas food safety message this year so that everyone can enjoy their festive dinner without suffering food poisoning symptoms. It is estimated that around a million people suffer from food poisoning in the UK each year, but following some simple steps in the kitchen can help protect families and friends.

Scots are being urged to make sure moss in festive wreaths has been legally and ethically sourced this Christmas. In the past, large quantities of moss have been illegally harvested from the wild and sold for wreaths and hanging baskets.

During a prolonged cold spell there may be an increased risk from fire due to the use of heaters, open fire and wood burning stoves which haven�t been used recently or are not properly maintained. It is a busy time for the Fire Service with 5000 fires caused by faulty electric blankets and around 12000 chimney fires each year in the UK.

The following steps describe what you should do as soon as you discover a burst pipe: Turn off the main water supply stop cock � you should find this under the kitchen sink or where the service pipe enters your home Drain the system � turn on all your cold taps Turn off water heating systems Turn off the electrics Call a professional to repair the water damage Please also note: If water has been leaking through for some time and the ceilings are bulging � be careful, rooms may not be safe to enter.

Householders reminded of recycling service for electrical items that have lost their spark With Christmas coming householders are being given a timely reminder that they can recycle all their old electrical items at their local recycling centre. Waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling (WEEE) has been available at all of the Council�s recycling centres since the start of 2010.

There are challenges for both borrowers and savers in equal measure; whether it is the saver who has seen interest paid on savings being slashed, or the borrower who can no longer access credit from their Bank.

More than 2,200 old, cold properties across Scotland are to be transformed into warm, environmentally friendly homes which are easier and cheaper to heat. New Scottish Government investment of �3.5 million has been allocated to 19 projects across Scotland, for the installation of energy efficiency measures such as solid wall insulation, double glazing and central heating in older homes.

Youth organisations will receive a CashBack Christmas present of �1.5 million, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill announced today. The first tranche of �5.6 million seized by the Crown from Abbot Group Limited under the Proceeds of Crime Act will go to a consortium of six national youth organisations led by Youth Scotland.

Around 65 staff in The Highland Council�s Education, Culture and Sport Service have recently completed a training programme aimed at encouraging generic leadership skills. Hugh Fraser, Highland Council�s Director of Education, Culture and Sport Service welcomed participants to a presentation day held in Milton of Leys School, Inverness on Saturday 8 December.

The Caithness Countryside Volunteers spent last Sunday morning building bird boxes at their last event of the year. A total of 14 standard bird boxes were built at Seadrift, The Highland Councils wildlife centre at Dunnet Bay.
