The 2016 Bower Gala was held on Saturday 20th August. The weather had been very heavy rain in the night before but happily it cleared up by the afternoon.

The 175th Caithness County Show got off to a wonderful Saturday morning and rain only came in by the afternoon. Nothing could stop the event by then.

Recently Primary 2 and Primary 6 pupils of Pennyland Primary School in Thurso, buddied up to tackle a serious issue in their local environment - rubbish! Many of the children were shocked at the amount of litter they encountered. In just 45 minutes 14 black sacks were filled with not only litter but many other items such as a large fluorescent light bulb and a royal mail box.

Pulteneytown Academy will soon be no more when it joins with South School under its new name of Newton Park and moves to a brand new school. An open day was held to allow anyone including former pupils to have final look around the old school before it gets demolished later this year to make way for a new playing field for the new school.
The crowds were out in force for Thurso Gala 2016 night on Saturday 25 June 2016. The change of venue to the car park area seems to have been a good one with much wider space for all the activities.
Over 140 pupils from Thurso High School, Wick High School, Golspie High School and Tain Royal Academy descended upon North Highland College UHI's ETEC building last week to take part in The Bloodhound Project Model Rocket Car Challenge. This is a global competition backed by Guinness World Records.

Over forty members of the public attended a series of high profile guided walks on the peatlands of Caithness and Sutherland led by the Highland Council Rangers. Andy Summers, Senior Countryside Ranger said: "We saw lots of exciting wildlife including great views of a peregrine falcon, breeding greenshanks and red-throated divers, dragonflies hunting around bog pools.

These vary from Maternity where many more mothers in recent times are being sent to Raigmore hospital in Inverness, Lack of consultants, Locum cover, Lack of GP's.
Just less than a week separated Halkirk and Melvich Primary School's village litter picks but the weather couldn’t have been more different. Both village litter picks were undertaken as part of the schools Eco-studies programme and registered with the Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign and each event received assistance from The Highland Council’s local Countryside Ranger Paul Castle.
