Bowel screening saves 750 lives
Around 750 lives have been saved in Scotland since the introduction of the national bowel screening programme in 2007.   The figures have been revealed to coincide with Nudge Day, a national day of action to encourage Scots to �nudge� older family members to get tested for bowel cancer.

High visibility police campaign welcomed by communities
LOCAL Police throughout the Highlands and Islands took part in a national Campaign Against Violence on Friday 12 April.   As part of the Police Scotland's Violence Reduction Strategy, additional and dedicated patrols, utilising all available officers, are scheduled throughout the year to focus on tackling all types of violence and anti-social behaviour.

Five lucky winners who recycled their glass at their local Recycling Point, have received a �20 voucher for the Thurso Cinema.   The Highland Council�s Waste Awareness Team ran the recent competition, which invited householders to email the Council a photograph of themselves recycling their glass, to be in with a chance of winning.

Two community-based projects which have raised awareness and helped people get involved in nature and landscapes in Caithness and Sutherland have been praised.   In December 2009, two grants from Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) were matched with money from The Highland Leader Programme to provide �80,000 for biodiversity projects in Caithness and Sutherland.

New website promotes natural and historic attractions
A new website which aims to encourage more people to explore Scotland's stunning historic and natural attractions was launched recently by Environment Minister Paul Wheelhouse.   Called Scotland's Protected Places, it was unveiled as part of the Year of Natural Scotland celebrations.

We have just added some new photos taken from slightly above Sinclair Girnigoe Castle.   In 1643 George died, as he was predeceased by his son, Lord Berriedale and grandson, the Master of Berriedale, his title and debts passed to his great grandson also George 6th Earl of Caithness.

Record participation in higher education
Participation in higher education among young Scots has reached a record high according to figures released today by the Scottish Funding Council.   The report, which measures participation of initial entrants to higher education, also shows that Scottish participation remains higher than in England, and the participation of 16 to 19 year olds is also at a record high.
