A Bill that will give every 16 and 17 year old the right to add their voice to the most important decision made in Scotland in 300 years has been introduced to the Scottish Parliament.   The Scottish Referendum (Franchise) Bill will ensure that everyone aged 16 and above on the day of the referendum in 2014 will be able to participate in the historic vote, and help decide what type of country they want Scotland to be.

New Skills Development Fund For Museums Sector
Details of a new fund created by Museums Galleries Scotland to support the Scottish museums sector in skills building and workforce development have been announced.   The Scottish Government is providing £80,000 to establish the SkillsDevelopment Fund to support the sector to work in partnership to run training courses and skills development programmes in Scotland.

THIS seafarer might not be quite as big as his walrus cousin which visited the shores of North Ronaldsay but he still turned a few heads when he came up river to sample the spring sunshine below Wick town bridge.  The seal settled on a rock only a few yards from the bank and appeared to lap up the attention from passers-by and photographers.

As spring approaches, dog owners are being encouraged to pick up after their dog when out and about.   The latest national radio campaign from Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) begins this week, focussing on the issues surrounding dog waste, as part of ongoing work to publicise access rights and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

TSB FOUNDATION FOR SCOTLAND - SKYPE SURGERIES TSB Foundation for Scotland is holding a small number of surgeries on Skype which will allow people from anywhere in the country to have an appointment.  These will be run in exactly the same way as the Foundation's face to face surgeries, with groups making an appointment in advance for a specific time.

The Highland Council is working alongside Zero Waste Scotland to help raise awareness of the benefits of food packaging and show consumers how packaging and labels can help them waste less and save more.  The average household can save £430 a year, or £35 a month simply by making the most of the food we buy.

PEOPLE'S POSTCODE TRUST SMALL GRANTS PROGRAMME The People''s Postcode Trust has announced its Small Grants Programme is now closed and will re-open for applications on the 7th April 2013.   Through its small grants programme, the People''s Postcode Trust offers grants of between £500 and £10,000 to small organisations and community groups for projects lasting up to 6 months in the areas of Poverty Prevention; Advancement of Health; Community Development; Public Sports; Human Rights; and Environmental Protection.

Members of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers met last Sunday (10th March 2013) to help plant trees and wild flowers at the ‘Planting for the Future’ site at Ormlie, Thurso.   The volunteers planted a range of broadleaf trees including rowan and beech and planted wildflowers such as fox glove and cowslip to help provide useful habitat to wildlife at the site.
