New National Nature Reserve will be UK's largest
The UK's newest and largest National Nature Reserve (NNR) - The Great Trossachs Forest - took a step closer to reality today (13 August), after it was approved by the Board of Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). The Great Trossachs Forest NNR, which lies at the heart of the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, is home to magnificent wildlife in an area within an hour's drive for 80% of Scotland's population.

A boost for golden eagles in South Scotland
uilding on a report published by Scottish Natural Heritage last year, a new project will help boost the number of golden eagles in the South of Scotland. The project will look in detail at further work needed to revive the population, and build on the excellent partnership forged to realise the ambition of having more of these birds in the south.

Orkney goose management project enters fourth year
A project to manage resident geese populations in Orkney is set to enter its fourth year, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has confirmed. The Orkney greylag goose adaptive management pilot will allow local people to control the resident greylag geese population.

Dounreay staff support cancer relay event
The third Caithness Relay for Life fundraising event for Cancer Research UK takes place at the Thurso County Showground on Saturday August 29, and Dounreay folk have been working hard to help with the organisation. Starting at 3pm with a children's relay, the event will last until 6am on Sunday.15/8/2015
New insect species found in Scotland
An insect species has been found for the first time in the British Isles. Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) staff discovered a fly, Okeniella caudata, in the Glen Clova area of the Cairngorms in July this year.

13/8/2015Caithness Horizons Museum welcomes half a million visitors.
Tuesday 11th August saw local group No Limits Caithness visit the Museum for a morning packed with Viking activities with Curator Joanne Howdle, or Thordis Eiríksdóttir as she is fondly known to local groups and schools. The group helped the Museum to hit the half million visitors mark and to celebrate they were presented with a special cake made in the Museum's cafe.

More Recycling Opportunities From The Council
The Highland Council is introducing further new materials to the blue bin recycling service at the end of August. Following on from the recent introduction of aerosols, envelopes and cardboard food and drink cartons, from Monday 31st August residents will also be able to recycle plastic pots, tubs and trays.

Saturday 15th August Join Melissa and Romain of the School of Ancient Crafts as we explore how plants and herbs were used in the past. This workshop will include a spot of foraging as well as making soap with native herbs, using pot-boilers (hot stones) to heat milk and make a soft cheese, baking bread next to an open fire, and much more! Join us again on Sunday 16th August to learn how to build a prehistoric oven in which we will bake fish and bread.

This is according to a new report on the recent Young people and the Highlands and Islands: Attitudes and aspirations study commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Halkirk Highland Games 2015
The weather was kinder than anticipated given the rain this year and the ground stood up very well with no muddy condition like the county show. Heavy athletes came from several countries to compete A good show of dancing kept the afternoon flowing between the pipe bands and, cycle and flat races..

North MSP highlight need for more to be done to tackle bullying
Highlands and Islands (including Moray) MSP, Rhoda Grant, who set up the anti-bullying site Tobie (Tackling Oppressive Behaviour In Employment) is delighted at the number of people accessing her site, but she is equally concerned by the level of bullying in the workplace that is on-going. Eight months ago, during December 2014, Rhoda Grant launched the site in Inverness and Elgin.[History]
