Highland Council celebrates award-winning school meals for ninth year running
Highland parents urged to take advantage of fresh, healthy, and sustainable school meals which have once again been recognised with a national award.   Despite the challenges of serving Scotland's largest council area, which includes some of the most sparsely populated areas of the UK, Highland Council is celebrating after achieving the Soil Association Scotland's Silver and Bronze Food for Life Served Here award in its primary schools and nurseries for the ninth year running.

Guest speaker at a recent Caithness Heart support Group AGM was local Highland councillor Nicola Sinclair who gave a thought-provoking address about health services in Caithness and the challenges facing them and the NHS.   Cllr Sinclair is well placed to speak to groups about health service having been a founder member of Caithness Health Action Team (CHAT) and still involved in the campaigns over Caithness health issues.

A TRIBUTE was paid at the AGM of Caithness Heart Support Group, recently, to long-serving chairman Ernie Ross, standing down after nine years service.   Highlighting Mr Ross's contribution, the new chairman, Noel Donaldson said: "Ernie has not always enjoyed the best of health but has always given us a one hundred percent commitment to the group and that has been greatly appreciated." However, Mr Donaldson was pleased to add that Mr Ross was not severing his connection with the group but has decided to remain as a committee member.

A Wick High School teacher is spending the summer in Rwanda delivering teacher training opportunities in the country.   Caitlin Morrison, who teaches social subjects and history, is travelling to the Zaza in the Eastern Province as part of the Global Learning Partnerships (GLP) professional development programme alongside charity Inspire, Educate and Empower Rwanda.

Wick Voices, the Wick Society's oral history section, has broken through the 100,000 barrier in terms of listener response to its collection of online recordings.   That's how many individual plays there have been since the project was set up less than two years ago with the aim of preserving local voices for posterity.

Canisbay Primary Parent Council were looking to make improvements to the playground and last year we supported Mrs Moodie out headteacher in an application to Greencoat Stroupster Community Fund.  We submitted an application which was to: Build a canopy / shelter at the school which would give 2 benefits , an outdoor classroom area and also a shelter and play area for the kids to be protected from the Caithness weather.

Changes to collection of information on funded Early Learning and Childcare
The Highland Council is informing parents on changes in how the authority collects information on funded Early Learning and Childcare following guidance introduced by the Scottish Government.   The guidance states: Each year the Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) census collects information about children receiving funded ELC across Scotland.

SCHOOLS COULD WIN £1000 FOR THEIR BREAKFAST CLUB
Local schools could be in with the chance of winning £1,000 for their pre-school club to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kellogg's supporting breakfast clubs in the UK.   Schools are invited to enter the annual Kellogg's Breakfast Club Awards, and one club from each region of the UK, as well as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will win a cash prize.

BSL Plan - we want to hear from BSL users!
The Highland Council and its partners at the University of the Highlands and Islands and NHS Highland are preparing their first British Sign Language (BSL) plans, which will be published in October.   These will reflect a national BSL Plan published by the Scottish Government last year.
