Caithness Voluntary Group, in partnership with Pulteneytown People's Project and Thurso Community Development Trust have been awarded 183,296 to employ the four full-time development workers and a part-time co-ordinator.   The 12-month project will employ, a community development worker for Wick will be employed by PPP and based at the Pulteney Centre, as will a childcare development worker.

A World Heritage Site in Caithness and Sutherland? The Flow Country currently sits on the UK's tentative list for World Heritage Site inscription, in recognition of its world-class blanket bog habitat and unique assemblages of bird species.  A Working Group has been established to put forward The Flow Country's nomination to the UK Government, who will decide if the nomination can proceed to UNESCO.

A walk around Wick harbour yesterday showed a higher number of boats than usual probably due to the bad weather out at sea and the end of the holiday period.   The buildings being completely change on the front of the harbour are advancing at a steady rate with many new jobs scheduled to be located there later this year.

Leaving a Legacy to the Laurandy Day Care Centre Since the Laurandy Day Care Centre first opened many people and their families have benefited from the services of the centre.   It is a centre available to the needs of the elderly in our community, and is here to help people in need of daily activities and to offer respite for carers.

Semichem and Scotmid Co-operative has partnered with Scottish SPCA as their charity of the year to raise £300,000 to support education programme in schools across the country.   Semichem Thurso and Wick will team up with Scottish SPCA Caithness rescue and rehoming centre each month Semichem stores in Thurso and Wick will support Scottish SPCA in educating the next generation of animal lovers over the coming year and are encouraging the local community to take action.

Caithness Access Panel Report
Caithness Access panel meets monthly In the Pulteney Centre in Wick on the last Wednesday of the month between 12 - 2pm.   We are all volunteers and have a membership of over 20 who attend and also through our petition over 200 supporters of the group's aims.

Thursday 29th November at 7:30pm: A talk by Roy Mackenzie on the Veteran's Tower, in the Smith Room at the Pulteney Centre, Huddart Street, Wick Tuesday 22nd January 2019 at 7:30pm in the Pentland Hotel, Thurso: A talk by Lydia Fensome on bygone bikes, illustrated by some in her own collection.   Saturday 9th February 2019: A walk, led by Joy and Tony, around Achvarasdal, to see the broch.

Highlands & Islands Regional MSP Rhoda Grant was concerned to learn that five patients travel from Skye to Raigmore Hospital three times a week for kidney dialysis treatment.   When a patient's kidneys fail, dialysis treatment keeps the body in balance by removing waste, salt and extra water to prevent them from building up in the body.

Pupils from Inverness pledge their support for anti-bullying campaign
Pupils from Raigmore Primary School in Inverness have taken the lead in a bid to address bullying after taking part in specially designed workshops as part of this year's anti-bullying campaign.   Led by Scotland's anti-bullying service respectme, this year’s anti-bullying campaign focuses on choosing respect, with pupils trying out specially developed resources designed to help young people build positive, respectful relationships.

New research from Inchcape reveals that half of designated drivers could be consuming more than double the legal drink drive limit on Christmas day from alcoholic ingredients in food.   In a survey of 2,000 Brits, half (49%) don't take alcohol consumed through food into account when thinking about the drink-drive limit, whilst almost one third (28%) felt uninformed about alcohol retention in cooking and wrongly believe all alcohol used for ingredients is burned off during the cooking process.
