Highland Environment Forum launches new plan to help Nature and Wildlife
A new plan to help wildlife was launched today (23 September) at the Highland Environment Forum's September meeting in Inverness. Highland Nature: The Biodiversity Action Plan will help target resources to address 33 wildlife priorities which have been identified under headings ranging from the sustainable management of habitats and species, to taking biodiversity into account during building and maintenance works, to delivering local projects, raising awareness, tackling invasive non-native species and improving the management and sharing of biological records.

Communities invited to find out how to restore War Memorials
The public are being invited to 3 events being held in in the Highlands to find out more about how to obtain funding to repair and conserve local war memorials. The Highland Council is supporting the War Memorials Trust who is holding the events in Thurso, Inverness and Fort William on 5, 6 and 7 October respectively.

NEW SERVICE LAUNCHED TO SUPPORT TEACHERS OF BLIND LEARNERS
Scotland's largest visual impairment organisation will today launch a new service to support teachers in mainstream schools who have visually impaired children in their classroom. The Royal Blind Learning Hub will provide training, support, advice and workshops to all those involved in the education of visually impaired children and young people across Scotland.22/9/2015
Chance to represent local views as Community Council nominations open
The process for creating new community councils across the Highlands has begun and The Highland Council is encouraging anyone interested in acting as a voice for their local area to put themselves forward. Community Councils are voluntary organisations that express the views and concerns of local people within their area across a wide range of issues from new buildings and roads to local services and facilities.21/9/2015

The Highland Council is supporting the Blythswood Syrian Refugee appeal. We have advised COSLA that it would be willing to play its part in any government arranged Syrian Resettlement Scheme.

Gluten-free food service available from pharmacists
New service will make access easier for patients. Coeliac patients and those with a clinical need for gluten-free food will now be able to get their prescriptions directly from their local pharmacy, rather than needing to go to their GP.18/9/2015

Safer cycling and walking to school for north pupils
Pupils at two Sutherland and two Caithness primary schools are to benefit from projects being delivered by The Highland Council through the Scottish Government's Cycling, Walking and Safer Streets (CWSS) programme. Members of The Highland Council's Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee have given their approval for £39,965 CWSS funding for projects at Gledfield, Lochinver, Castletown and Canisbay Primaries.14/9/2015

Wick Waves' - Local Sea Festival
The Highland Council's Countryside Ranger Service, with funding and support from the Highland Seashore Project, have come together with local community groups, organisations and businesses in Wick to run a week of Seashore related events from the 21st to the 26th September. This week of free coastal festivities has been titled Wick Waves and brings artfully together the exploration of the huge diversity of life on the coast; the influence the coast has had on shaping Wick its self and local art, books, food, music and sport.
