Highland Council update on refugees
Highland Council is working with COSLA and community planning partners to plan and prepare for welcoming Syrian refugees to the Highlands.   The Council has agreed with COSLA to take up to 25 - 30 families, over the period of the national re-settlement programme, subject to the confirmation of available housing.

Mount Pleasant Primary School P5 class (+ Eco committee) joined Miller Academy Primary School P6 class to undertake a clean-up at Thurso Beach in Caithness on Tuesday 6 October.   Mr Harper from Mount Pleasant and Mrs Phares from Miller Academy brought fifty eight children in total to join forces with Paul Castle and Sam Watson the Highland Council Countryside Rangers and other helpers including Mrs Urquhart, Mr Boyter and Mrs Morris.

Cafe Exhibitions Paintings by Christine Scheuerl 1st October - 31st October Gallery Exhibitions Peter's Pals Young Curators Club Exhibition Exhibition ends on Saturday 10th October 2015 Members of the Peter's Pals Young Curators Club have been busy over the summer holidays rummaging through the Museum stores with curator Joanne Howdle.   They discovered lots of hidden treasures and have arranged an exhibition to showcase these to the public.

Over two hundred people took part in the recent Wick Waves festival which was organised by The Highland Council's Countryside Rangers.  This weeklong ‘sea' themed event took place around Wick Harbour with local clubs, charities and businesses putting on over 30 varied events, proving that ‘Wick Works Weel'.

The twenty-second Highland Archaeology Festival gets underway at the end of this week (Friday 2nd October) with another packed programme of events across the Highlands.   The fortnight-long Festival, which is co-ordinated by The Highland Council's Development and Infrastructure Service in partnership with dozens of local event organiser across the Highland Council area and in Moray, runs from Friday 2nd October to Sunday 18th October.

Deadline for Community Council nominations approaching
The deadline for submitting nominations to stand for Community Councils is next Tuesday, 6 October at 4pm.  Anyone wishing to stand for a Community Council in Highland must have their completed nomination form to the appropriate Ward Manager by this date.

Council Committee to discuss community transport grants
Details of a process for a call for community transport grants applications will be considered by The Highland Council's Community Services Committee at their meeting on 5th November 2015.   Twenty-two third sector organisations are currently grant funded through transport services and have been advised that their grants expire on 31st March 2016.

Protecting free school meals and early learning and childcare
Scottish Ministers to safeguard entitlements following UK welfare changes.   The Scottish Government will act to protect the rights of disadvantaged children to free school meals and early learning and childcare following changes to welfare being made by the UK Government, the First Minister has announced.

New adoption and fostering group
The Adoption and Fostering Alliance Scotland created.   A new organisation to help children and young people find adoptive and foster families has been created, Children's Minister Aileen Campbell announced today.

Pupils from Hillhead Primary school, Wick, took part in the national Marine Conservation Society's Beachwatch project on Monday 21st September.  The event, organised by the Highland Council's Planning and Infrastructure countryside rangers, launched the start of ‘Wick Waves', a week's long ‘sea’ themed events taking place in Wick.

A new plan to help wildlife was launched today (23 September) at the Highland Environment Forum's September meeting in Inverness.   Highland Nature: The Biodiversity Action Plan will help target resources to address 33 wildlife priorities which have been identified under headings ranging from the sustainable management of habitats and species, to taking biodiversity into account during building and maintenance works, to delivering local projects, raising awareness, tackling invasive non-native species and improving the management and sharing of biological records.

The public are being invited to 3 events being held in in the Highlands to find out more about how to obtain funding to repair and conserve local war memorials.   The Highland Council is supporting the War Memorials Trust who is holding the events in Thurso, Inverness and Fort William on 5, 6 and 7 October respectively.

NEW SERVICE LAUNCHED TO SUPPORT TEACHERS OF BLIND LEARNERS
Scotland's largest visual impairment organisation will today launch a new service to support teachers in mainstream schools who have visually impaired children in their classroom.   The Royal Blind Learning Hub will provide training, support, advice and workshops to all those involved in the education of visually impaired children and young people across Scotland.

Chance to represent local views as Community Council nominations open
The process for creating new community councils across the Highlands has begun and The Highland Council is encouraging anyone interested in acting as a voice for their local area to put themselves forward.   Community Councils are voluntary organisations that express the views and concerns of local people within their area across a wide range of issues from new buildings and roads to local services and facilities.

Gluten-free food service available from pharmacists
New service will make access easier for patients.   Coeliac patients and those with a clinical need for gluten-free food will now be able to get their prescriptions directly from their local pharmacy, rather than needing to go to their GP.

Creative Scotland and Young Scot: Nurturing Talent - Time to Shine Fund Creative Scotland and Young Scot have announced that the next deadline for applications to the Nurturing Talent - Time to Shine Fund is the 18th October 2015.  The Creative Scotland Nurturing Talent - Time to Shine Fund aims to support young people aged 14-20 who need financial help in developing their talent within the creative industry.
