A Bond themed charity ball taking place in Wick this November is set to raise hundred of pounds for local causes.   The event at Mackays Hotel on 7th November has been arranged to mark the launch of the latest Bond movie 'Spectre' and will see all monies raised going to SiMBA (Simpson's Memory Box Appeal), Wick RNLI and Caithness and Sutherland Women's Aid.

New group to explore ways to reduce reliance on foodbanks.
The scourge of food poverty and possible solutions to Scotland's increasing reliance on foodbanks will be investigated by a new group.   Representatives from poverty organisations and charities will convene on Monday for the first meeting of the short life working group, to identify the issues which push people into food poverty and discuss how they can be addressed.

Additional graduates for nurseries in most deprived areas
Every nursery in Scotland's most deprived areas will have an additional qualified childcare graduate to work with children by 2018, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced.   The new approach will begin now and will see 25,000 children benefit from more face to face time with graduates, helping them reach their full potential whatever their background.

Wide variation in life expectancy between areas in Scotland
Life expectancy for men and women continues to improve, according to a report published today by the Registrar General for Scotland.   Based on statistics covering 2012-2014, the report breaks down further the estimates published at Scotland level on 20 August 2015 which showed that life expectancy is now 77.1 years for men and 81.1 years for women in Scotland.

Royal Regiment of Scotland parades
The Royal Regiment of Scotland will parade through Inverness today 15 October 3pm, and tomorrow 16 October at Wick 10:30am; Fort William 11:20am; and Dingwall at 3pm.   The parades mark will mark the conferral of the Freedom of the Highland Region upon the Royal Regiment of Scotland by The Highland Council.

UK Government will be hosting commemorative events in the Orkney Islands
Government plans to commemorate the Battle of Jutland, the great naval battle of the First World War.   The Culture Secretary today announced the Government's plans to commemorate the Battle of Jutland, which brought together the two most powerful naval forces of the time in the largest naval battle of the First World War.

Highland Council update on refugees
Highland Council is working with COSLA and community planning partners to plan and prepare for welcoming Syrian refugees to the Highlands.   The Council has agreed with COSLA to take up to 25 - 30 families, over the period of the national re-settlement programme, subject to the confirmation of available housing.

Mount Pleasant Primary School P5 class (+ Eco committee) joined Miller Academy Primary School P6 class to undertake a clean-up at Thurso Beach in Caithness on Tuesday 6 October.   Mr Harper from Mount Pleasant and Mrs Phares from Miller Academy brought fifty eight children in total to join forces with Paul Castle and Sam Watson the Highland Council Countryside Rangers and other helpers including Mrs Urquhart, Mr Boyter and Mrs Morris.
