THE war memorial in the royal burgh of Wick has been disrespected by vandals It would probably have taken two of them, one standing on the other's shoulders to reach the top of the statue's base and place the traffic cone on the top of the head.   It will certainly require a ladder or a long pole to remove it.

It's hard to believe it has come round again so quickly but its time to think about your Christmas cards! 2nd Thurso Scouts will be running their Community Scout Post again this year and post boxes are now out in their locations around the town and will remain open until Friday 17th December at Newsbeat on Princes Street, Frasers on Castlegreen Road, McColls in High Ormlie, the Co-op in Mount Pleasant and in Thurso Library and the Council offices in Rotterdam Street.  It’s fantastic that local government and local businesses support this worthwhile event.

The decorated umbrella parade turned the Market Square in Wick to a colourful display with many having lights on to brighten the evening.   Santa and helpers were around all afternoon as kids queued to see him in his hut.

CHAT Stall At Wick Fun Day Raises Great Amount For Fighting Fund
CHAT's treasurer has sent out a message about today's Funday with regard to the stalls funds - "Well done to everyone involved in the fundraising stall in the Market Square today, the total raised was £672.87 which is really great.  The total is for everything - raffle, donations, etc it includes the £40 that Bill received as donations." CHAT chairman Bill Fernie paid tribute to a great and dedicated group who are pulling out all the stops in their efforts to oppose NHS Highland plans to downgrade maternity services at Caithness General and he said, Once again people in Caithness have shown their generosity and that they are prepared to help ensure that funds are not a problem in taking the campaign forward.

Funding for 3rd sector culture and leisure groups decided
Highland Council's third sector culture and leisure funding until 2018/19 has been agreed by Members of the Education, Children and Adult Services Committee according to Council priorities as previously set in December 2014.   Members have agreed grant allocations of £1,053,409 for 2017/18 and £493,821 for 2018/19.

The long-awaited report of Public Health Scotland (PHS) into maternity services at Caithness General Hospital was launched today, and recommends that the Henderson Maternity Unit moves to a midwife led model (CMU).  The Report concludes that Caithness does not have the population to support an obstetrician, and that the presence of specialists without the backup of intensive care facilities or a paediatrician creates unnecessary risk factors for patients.
