A small freshwater fish, whose habitat had reduced to just two locations in England, is successfully surviving following its introduction to Loch Skeen near Moffat.   Conservation charity, The National Trust for Scotland, has been working with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and experts from the University of Glasgow to establish a thriving population of the fish in the loch, which sits in the Trust's Grey Mare's Tail nature reserve.

Councillor calls for people to vote for Dornoch
Dornoch is the only Scottish finalist in the Great British High Street Awards and local Councillor Jim McGillivray is calling for people to cast their vote to give the Sutherland village a chance of winning.   He said: "Across all fourteen categories of the awards, Dornoch is the only Scottish finalist, and we're up against Leominister and Stockton on Tees in the Rising Star category, both of which have much larger populations than we do.

Your Cash Your Caithness - deadline for entries approaches
Local groups in Caithness are reminded that the closing date for Your Cash Your Caithness applications is drawing near and to be in with a chance of receiving a share of £30,000 forms need to be received by 5.00pm on Monday 31st October.   Caithness Members of The Highland Council have set aside £30,000.00 from their Ward Discretionary Budget to let the local community decide for themselves which projects are needed in their area.

Thurso Beach in Caithness had virtually every little piece of litter removed yesterday (Wednesday 5 October 2016) thanks to the hard work of pupils from Mount Pleasant Primary School.   The Keep Scotland Beautiful registered beach clean was undertaken by the Primary 4 and 5 classes and the P4 Gaelic medium class.

A 2013 study in the Wildlife Society Bulletin estimated that wind turbines inadvertently kill many bats a year across the UK alone.   Conservationists believe bats ,which are a protected species, are dying while hunting insects that are attracted by the heat generated by turbine blades.

Caithness Members of The Highland Council have set aside £30,000 from their Ward Discretionary Budgets to let the local community once again decide for themselves which projects are needed in their area.   Whether locals want to organise a dance for young people, a healthy living project, a crime prevention idea, a lunch club for older residents, a community art project, the only limit is their imagination.
