Citizen Science In Scotland's Seas - The Seasearch Sceme

The talk will be TUESDAY 7th of April, at 17:30 at the Environmental Research Institute, Castle street, Thurso.
Dr. Joanne Porter, from Heriot-Watt University, will be talking about "Citizen science in Scotland's seas at the Seasearch scheme".
Seasearch is a project for volunteer sports divers who have an interest in what they're seeing under water, want to learn more and want to help protect the marine environment around the coasts of Britain and Ireland.
The main aim is to map out the various types of sea bed found in the near-shore zone around the whole of Britain and Ireland. In addition we are recording what lives in each area, establishing the richest sites for marine life, the sites where there are problems and the sites which need protection. In Scotland the scheme is going strong, and some of the activities of local groups and the highlights of uses of the Seasearch data will be discussed.
Dr Joanne Porter is an Associate Professor in Marine Science, currently seconded to the Heriot Watt University Orkney Campus. She learned to dive in 1994 and is now an open water instructor with the International Association for Technical and Nitrox Divers, with a specialist qualification for training Scientific Diving. She has been involved in the Seasearch scheme for more than ten years and is a tutor for the Observer level training and a specialist tutor in the Identification of Hydroids and Bryozoa. She is a keen underwater photographer and in 2012 published a Seasearch Photographic Guide to Hydroids and Bryozoa.

Farming and Feasting at the Iron Age site of Mine Howe, Orkney
The talk will take place this coming Thursday, the 27th February at 1730, at the Environmental Research Institute, Castle Street. Dr Ingrid Mainland, from Orkney College UHI will be talking to us about ‘Farming and Feasting at the Iron Age site of Mine Howe, Orkney’ Excavations at Minehowe, an enigmatic site on the Orkney Mainland, have recovered rich bioarchaeological assemblages including carbonised plant remains, land and marine molluscs and mammal, bird and fish bone, dating from the 3rd century BC to the fourth-fifth centuries AD.
