HEADWAY HIGHLAND – CAITHNESS
Headway Highland in Caithness is a local charity that was formed by volunteers to reduce isolation and provide much needed information and support to brain injury survivors, their families and carers. Headway highland in Caithness meets on the last Tuesday of the month alternating meetings between Thurso and Wick.

Our aims are: To promote understanding of all aspects of brain injury. To provide information, support and services for people who have suffered a brain injury, their families and carers. Affiliated to Headway UK the brain injury association, Headway Highland in Caithness relies solely upon voluntary donations to continue to provide vital services to brain injury survivors and their families. Headway is independent and impartial.

Brain injury is often known as the “hidden disability” because the problems that arise from brain injury are not always obvious or visible to another person. Problems can include: personality changes, lack of insight, inappropriate behaviour, poor memory, speech and language difficulties, fatigue, poor perception, recognition and judgement, difficulty understanding, poor planning and problem solving skills, mental health problems, loss of physical sensations and physical disabilities.
Brain injury is defined as loss of brain function which can be caused by: accidents, poisoning, stroke, brain tumours, infections and lack of oxygen. Brain injury can have very serious effects on the lives of people who sustain the injury and their families. There is no miracle cure for brain injury – it takes hard work to develop the skills that have been lost, to develop new skills, effective coping strategies and ways of compensating for difficulties. Brain injury survivors need to gain self confidence, self awareness and insight in order that realistic goals can be achieved.

For many people with a brain injury, their families and carers, Headway Highland in Caithness is a lifeline offering local support and information to people living in Caithness who are coping with life and the emotional roller coaster that goes with brain injury.
