Interested in Learning More About Gaelic Medium Education?
6th February 2020
Highland Council Gaelic Team organised a fun, open day session which was held in Mount Pleasant Primary School, Thurso, at the end of last week. The informal session was well attended and held to provide parents with information regarding Gaelic Medium Education and the benefits of bilingualism.
The Highland Council Sgoil- Araich staff - Catriona Smith and Heather Bain, and The Highland Council's Gaelic Community Learning and Development Officer (North Area) Dolina Grant, were present to answer any queries that parents had.
The Fàs Foghlaim video which was devised by Highland Council and features specialists including Professor Antonella Sorace (University of Edinburgh) and various professionals and parents who explain the benefits of being bilingual was shown to parents. Professor Sorace explains how young children can pick up languages quickly and relatively easily and how skills can be gained from speaking more than one language.
The children took part in craft activities as well as a Gaelic Book Bug session which was led by local Gaelic parent and toddler worker for the Care and Learning Alliance (CALA) Debbie Larnach.
Mount Pleasant's Gaelic choir, conducted by Gaelic class teacher Miss Lynsey Munro, sang several songs which helped to demonstrate their ability and progression in speaking Gaelic.
The Gaelic medium school children then played with the younger children while Miss Munro was able to speak to parents and address any further questions they might have.
Open days are crucial as they provide the opportunity for parents to see the benefits of bilingualism and how Gaelic Medium Education operates. The Highland Council Gaelic Language Plan has targets for Gaelic Medium Education and realises the importance of supporting the growth of Gaelic education. Gaelic Medium Education has been provided in Thurso for many years now and these open days provide the opportunity for local achievement to be promoted.

Bha mòran an làthair aig an t-seisean a bha air a chumail gus fiosrachadh a thoirt do phàrantan mu Fhoghlam tron Ghàidhlig agus na buannachdan a tha an lùib dà-chànanais.
Bha luchd-obrach na Sgoil-Àraich - Catrìona Nic a’ Ghobhainn agus Heather Bain – agus Dolina Ghrannd, Oifigear Ionnsachadh is Leasachadh Coimhearsnachd Gàidhlig Chomhairle na Gàidhealtachd (Sgìre a Tuath) an làthair airson ceistean phàrantan a fhreagairt.
Chaidh bhidio Fàs Foghlaim a rinneadh le Comhairle na Gàidhealtachd a shealltainn do phàrantan. Tha am bhidio a’ sealltainn eòlaichean mar an t-Ollamh Antonella Sorace (Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann) agus proifeiseantaich is pàrantan eile ag innse mu na buannachdan a tha an lùib dà-chànanais. Tha an t-Ollamh Sorace a’ mìneachadh mar as urrainn do chloinn òga cànanan a thogail gu luath is gu furasta agus mar a dh’fhaodas sgilean a bhith air an togail bho bhith a’ bruidhinn barrachd air aon chànan.
Ghabh a’ chlann com-pàirt ann an cleasan ciùird agus ann an seisean Book Bug Gàidhlig a bha air a stiùireadh le Debbie Larnach, neach-obrach pàrant is pàiste aig Care and Learning Alliance (CALA).
Ghabh còisir Ghàidhlig Mount Pleasant grunn òran, fo stiùir na M-uas Lynsey Rothach a tha a’ teagasg clas Gàidhlig. Chan e a-mhàin gun do thaisbean seo an comas, ach sheall e cuideachd cho math ’s a bha iad a’ tighinn air adhart a’ bruidhinn na Gàidhlig.
Chluich a’ chlann a tha an lùib Foghlam tron Ghàidhlig còmhla ris a’ chloinn as òige fhad ’s a bhruidhinn a’ Bh-uas Rothach ri pàrantan. Bha cothrom aice ceistean sam bith eile a bh’ aca a fhreagairt.
Tha làithean fosgailte fìor chudromach oir tha iad a’ toirt cothrom do phàrantan na buannachdan a tha an lùib dà-chànanais fhaicinn agus eòlas a chur air mar a tha Foghlam tron Ghàidhlig ag obair. Tha targaidean ann am Plana Gàidhlig Chomhairle na Gàidhealtachd airson Foghlam tron Ghàidhlig agus thathar ag aithneachadh cho cudromach ’s a tha fàs ann am Foghlam Gàidhlig. Thathar air a bhith a’ solarachadh Foghlam tron Ghàidhlig ann an Inbhir Theòrsa airson iomadh bliadhna a-nis agus tha na làithean fosgailte seo a’ toirt cothrom dhuinn na thathar a’ coileanadh gu h-ionadail a bhrosnachadh.
