High Life Highland today announced that it has been successful in an application to the Year of Young People National Lottery Fund, to support its HLH Leadership Programme. "Choose to Lead" will be a Leadership Award that will be recognised by the SCQF Framework and accreditation of the award will be carried out by the University of The Highlands and Islands.

The £9,000 award received from Year of Young people National Lottery Fund Award will be used to cover the costs of accreditation as well as training of mentors and transport and equipment to support the delivery of the qualification. Young people who complete the "Choose to Lead" programme will receive a recognised qualification which will help them apply for college and university places.

The High Life Highland Leadership programme has already seen 2711 young leaders take part and is open to young people aged 12-25 years. Although underpinned by leadership in sport and youth work, the awards can be utilised by young people volunteering in clubs, facilities and schools. All members of the programme are also encouraged to sign up for Saltire Awards. These national awards are designed to formally recognise the commitment and contribution of youth volunteering.

Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, Seona Reid, said: "I am delighted that High Life Highland has been successful in securing an award from the Year of Young People National Lottery Fund. This funding will help young people to make a positive change in their lives and I wish HLH every success as it works to improve young people's health and wellbeing in celebration of Scotland's Year of Young People."

Chief Executive Ian Murray said "The High Life Leadership Programme has already made a tangible difference to the confidence of a large number of young people across the Highland Region and I am delighted that the funding application was successful and we will now be offering qualifications which are recognised by further education institutions as part of the SCQF framework. I wish all of our young leaders every success as they embark on the programme.
