Wick High Pupils design app to encourage children to go outdoors

Two high school pupils have created an app designed to encourage children to enjoy the outdoors more often.
Mari-Ann Ganson and Ellora James, who are both 17, created Envirocache for an apps competition.
The Wick High School students' app draws on geo-cache technology to provide children with nature treasure hunts while they go for walks.
Ellora's work on the project has helped her to win 2017's Scottish Women in Technology One to Watch award.
She said: "It's so humbling to be at the beginning of my journey and yet still recognised for my passion for technology.
"I hope that I can use this success to continue to be a role model for others, work to improve diversity in technology and show how schools can work to encourage this too."
The teenagers received help from Interface, an organisation that provides support in developing products.
It matched the pair with an academic at Aberdeen's Robert Gordon University to develop their app.
Wick High School has built a reputation for its students making new applications for technology.

Pupils Plant Trees To Improve Wick Riverside
Recently pupils and leaders from Step Forward Wick Youth had the opportunity to help out in our local community. Along with Wick Development Trust and The Countryside Rangers they managed to plant 300 trees along the Wick Riverside to help provide some woodland areas along the riverside, giving the local wildlife shelter and a food source too.

The S2 first team at Wick High School recently qualified for the Scottish Schools plate competition by beating Fortrose Academy and Nicolson Institute. The wins earned them runner up spot in the North Qualifying League.
New Chair and Vice Chair for Highland Youth Parliament
The Highland Youth Parliament (HYP) has voted in a new Chair, Innes Morgan from Thurso and Vice Chair, Isaac Beckley from Glenurquhart, near Inverness. Wick High Pupils Receive SQA Cyber Security Award
In the second year of running in the SQA's Award in Cyber Security Fundamentals Wick High is delighted that 37 S3 pupils received the award. After spending two months learning about cyber security threats and how to defend against them, pupils sat an exam that covered both the theory and practical elements of the course.
