Police advise caution near frozen water after dog falls through ice.
Police are advising the public to be particularly cautious regarding frozen rivers and other water, following an incident in which a dog was rescued after falling through ice in Orkney.
The incident occurred at the Peedie Sea, Kirkwall at about 13:00 on Thursday 24 January 2013. Police and Fire services attended to assist with the rescue of a dog which had fallen through the ice.
Police would like to remind people of the hazards of frozen waters and that although the ice may look safe it can be unpredictable and very dangerous. You should not go onto the ice or allow pets or children onto the ice. In the event of a person or a pet falling through ice you should not put yourself in danger and contact the emergency services immediately on 999.
