PPP News - The Newsletter of Pulteneytown People�s Project - April 2007

Pulteneytown People�s Project have a busy few months ahead of us, with the opening of Wick Training Centre. We have a newly appointed Learning Co-ordinator, Donnie Sinclair, who will be responsible for the setting up of the centre and delivery of training courses. At present we have over 500 service users on a weekly basis and with the new Training Centre; this is set to increase even more!

We plan to have an official opening of the Rosebank Playing Fields in June 2006. A date will be confirmed nearer the time.

Overall, we have secured just over �100,000 in funding which has/will been spent as follows;

Upgrading Bowling Facility - �16,000
Refurbishing Tennis Courts - �60,000
Refurbishing Crazy Golf - �10,000
Lighting and Seating - �15,000

The Directors of Pulteneytown People�s Project were the catalyst for this project, however, they would not have managed it without the assistance of the local people who supported us.

The Community Centre plans are coming along nicely. To date, we have secured a lease on the ground, planning permission is now in place and ground tests have been completed. We are on the 2nd stage of our Big Lottery funding application, which has to be in by August 2007. We will know by November 2007 if our application has been successful. The plans are up in our main office should anyone wish to come in and see them and newsletters are being published shortly with detailed plans and more information.

At present we have 2 Malawian and 2 Scottish volunteers working with us through Global Exchange. The volunteers will be working with us 4 days each week until the start of June 2007.

HomeLink Caithness
HomeLink Caithness is a housing support service, set up in 2003 to help young people aged 16 � 25 maintain their own tenancy.

Seven staff provide 158 hours of housing support through Supporting People and 25 hours through the Criminal Justice Service.

Support Workers assist young people with benefit applications, utility connections, budgeting, decorating, cooking, gardening and any other issues relating to maintaining a tenancy.

Support is provided on a one to one basis. HomeLink Caithness also run cooking and budgeting classes with young people to encourage social interaction and help build confidence and self esteem.

We also run the following hobbies groups in the Old Mans Rest;
Ladies Groups (activities include card making/stitch craft)
Tuesday � 1.30-3.30pm
Thursday � 10.30-12.30pm and 1.30-3.30pm
�1.50 per session/�2.00 for 2 sessions

Art Classes
Wednesday � 6.30-8.30pm
Friday � 2.00-4.00pm

M.A.A.S.K
M.A.A.S.K the Morning and After School Club based in Wick South School offers affordable childcare in a safe and secure setting at a cost of �2.50 per session (inclusive of transport) for working families and those in receipt of Working Family Tax.

A taxi service is available to transport children to and from the club from the other Wick primaries.

The Easter Club ran the first week in April with over 50 children using the service each day. Trips to Thurso and Castletown took place as well as many Easter themed games and activities such as �The Great Easter Egg Hunt�! The club takes place in Wick High School at a cost of �4 per half day and �6.50 per full day. Various different activities were on offer including arts and crafts, sports competitions and guitar/drumming tuition as well as various day trips to suit all ages!

TALK
T.A.L.K (Teens and Activities Leisure Club) provide classes, groups and activities for young people aged 12-16 and 16-25 at Pulteneytown People�s Project, Wick High School and the Old Mans Rest. Some of the activities we have an offer include;

Girls Group,
The Duke of Edinburgh Awards Group,
Lunch Club,
Guitar and Drumming Tuition,
Warhammer,
Get Crafty,
Games Afternoons.

Skateboarding sessions take place weekly with children being able to use our equipment to learn the skills involved. This makes good use of the recently built skate park. Young people also have the chance to visit other skate parks in the Highlands.
