Wester Ross Green Volunteers – Maintaining our Wildflower Areas, Ullapool
Last year our Highland Wildflower Meadow Mosaic sites got a good start but we need to keep looking after them and they will be even better to look at and for pollinators this coming summer.
On this visit, we will be reseeding and removing grass from the sites. You can come to any of the slots below (or all of them!) for as long as you like. Bring tools and gloves if you wish but the ranger will have some spare to use. Please turn up on the day and sign in.

- 10am – 10.45am we will be at Shore Street checking in on our reestablishing sea pinks.
- 11am – 12pm at the site at Quay Street outside the tennis court.

A Short Walk into Nature – Strontian
Join this local green health walk and help reconnect with the natural world. Enjoy some leisurely exercise, friendly company, great views, and fresh air. Following a different theme each week, find out a bit more about the nature on your doorstep. All our ‘short walks into nature’ series are flat, under an hour in length and suitable for all abilities and levels of fitness. Please disclose to your local ranger any medical or additional support needs you may have prior to the walk.

Coastal guided walk at Scourie bay
Along the higher, north side of the bay, a mixture of moorland and sea-cliff, with dramatic views, lochans, geology, bog and heather, out to the point at Sithean Mor where there is a fine view of Handa island and beyond out over the Minch. Adults only 4km.

Ranger Ramble @ Dava Moor
This gentle Ranger Ramble at Dava Moor offers a serene stroll through a typical Highland moorland, with bogs, a lochan and even a few trees!
Bring your binoculars if you have them, but we’ll be concentrating on the botany and beasties, with some history thrown in too…hopefully we’ll get some orchids and weather permitting, a butterfly or two!
As we’re focusing on slow observation rather than brisk walking, this wee event is suitable for all – including good dogs.

Volunteer Day – Wildflower Management at Castlehill
Come along to Castlehill in Caithness and join other willing volunteers (over 18yrs only) to undertake essential wildflower management at this important site. All tools/gloves are provided and enjoy a warm drink at the end. This is a drop-in activity.
This work is running alongside other voluntary activities taking place at Castlehill Heritage Centre which are running at the same time. These other activities are suitable for all ages. Please get involved.

Beginners Leatherwork – 4-week course
Join us for a fun and hands-on **Beginners Leatherworking** course! This 4-week course is perfect for anyone interested in learning the art of leather craftsmanship.
Course dates are Tuesday 14th May, 28th May, 4th June and 18th June 2024
Starting on **Tue May 14, 2024**, at **18:00**, this in-person event will take place in the Community Outdoor learning hub at the Ben Nevis Visitor centre. Immerse yourself in the beautiful surroundings as you delve into the world of leatherworking.
Throughout the course, you will learn the basics of leatherworking, including cutting, stitching, and shaping leather to create your own unique pieces. Our Highland Heritage Ranger will guide you through each step, ensuring that you gain the necessary skills and confidence to create stunning leather goods.
No prior experience is required to participate in this course.

Gardens in a bottle – Share some You Time
Want to try something new while giving yourself some You Time, come along and join the Highland Heritage Ranger on this relaxed workshop to create your own terrarium in a bottle. Bring an old glass bottle or jar with a lid and we’ll turn it into a beautiful indoor miniature garden.
This 2-hour workshop is part of the monthly You Time traditional craft series where you can try new crafts and learn new skills in an informal, relaxed setting over a cup of tea and biscuits.
Tea, coffee, and biscuits are provided along with full tuition and equipment.

Culloden Avenue Tree and Sculpture Trail – Part of the Inverness Walking & Wheeling Festival

Bumblebee Presentation at The Seadrift Centre, Dunnet Bay
As part of ‘World Bee Day’ enjoy a ranger led presentation all about the bumblebees we find in the far north, particularly the very rare Great Yellow Bumblebee. Discover fascinating facts about these wonderful insects and learn just how important they are to us and also other wildlife. Amazing Achmelvich
Guided walk to see early orchids, jewelled rocks and marvellous machair as we walk along a coastline steeped in crofting history, to the old mill at Altanabradhan. We will see early specialists and some migrant birds. The total length of the walk is 6km, over rough path with a few steep steps. Suitable for families. Bring packed lunch. The amazing limestone valley at Inchnadamph
Guided walk with the Ranger in the valley of the trolls (Traligill) to see stunning orchids, colourful mountain avens and rare plants such as the Scottish Asphodel. Whale and Dolphin Watch at Sandside Head
As part of the Orca Watch Week, join the countryside Ranger at Sandside Head in Reay, Caithness to look for cetaceans. Use out telescopes to get a fantastic view of any passing cetaceans we may see (no guarantees of course). This involves a 1km walk to the watching site over rough hill ground – a reasonable level of fitness is required. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Otter Watch
To celebrate world otter day, join the Ranger for a walk along the shore at North Kessock to look out for otters in the Firth. We will discuss the life history of this amazing species and what you can do to help them in your area.

Armadale Bay to Strathy Point Walk
Enjoy this wonderful 10km coastal edge walk from Armadale Bay to Strathy Point in north Sutherland. We will visit a roaring blowhole, see plenty of wildflowers and fantastic coastal scenery along the way. Let’s keep our eyes open for whales or dolphins as we go. Some rough ground to cover so suitable walking gear and a reasonable level fitness is essential. Dogs are not welcome along on this walk. Over 18 years only. Donations are very welcome. Butterfly Walk at Ardersier Common
Join Pete Moore from Butterfly Conservation Scotland and John Orr from the High Life Highland Rangers for this beautiful and leisurely stroll.
The East coast is home to some of Scotland’s most beautiful and vulnerable wildlife; come and join us for a gentle walk along good paths as we look for butterflies and orchids with small blue butterflies being the target species.

Clachtoll Broch and Coastal walk
Ranger led guided coastal walk through a crofting township rich in wildlife, to the iron-age broch. Hear about the new discoveries of the recent excavation, stories of how the iron age people lived and catastrophic collapse that ended it all. Watch out for breeding redshank, snipe and divers and see signs of otters and the rare oyster plant, bog bean and others early flowers. Bring packed lunch. This is a 4km walk. An interesting dramatic rugged hill [380m] and coastal outing along Glen Dubh, through varied habitats of highland moorland, river and lochans overlooking loch Glendhu. Superb scenery & a chance of seeing red deer, eagle, seals, divers. Rough track, bring stout footwear and snack.

The Secrets of Glen Leireag, Need near Drumbeg
Visit the lost township of Glen Leireag with Iron-age souterrain and discover the secrets of this magical woodland glen full of wildlife surprises. Seek out moorland wildlife and golden eagles soaring in the shadow of Quinag. Please bring warm, waterproof clothing, good walking boots and a snack. Meet at Nedd Bridge, 2 miles east of Drumbeg. Balblair Rare
Enjoy a short guided walk from the car parking area at the entrance to Balblair woods at Loch Fleet, Golspie. From the path we will be able to see the beautiful woodland wildflowers One-flowered wintergreen and Twinflower. These flowers are particularly rare in Scotland today as they are ancient native pinewood specialists, they are not worth missing!

Bone Caves, Inchnadamph
Guided walk back in time to just after the ice-age where the bones of reindeer, polar bears and even humans were discovered in the caves. Stout footwear is essential. It is a good path but steep in places. Total distance for this walk is 5km. Suitable for families but childen must be over eight years old. Meet at the Bone Caves car park 4km south of Inchnadamph. ‘World Sand Dune Day’ Dunnet Beach, Dunes and Forest Walk
To celebrate ‘World Sand Dune Day’ enjoy a leisurely stroll with the countryside ranger, along Dunnet beach, then on into the dune system and back through Dunnet Forest. Let’s see what we can discover in these fascinating varied habitats and discover interesting facts about our local dunes.

The amazing mountain of Suilven
Join us on a guided walk to the top of Assynt’s most famous mountain, with some wonderful views. This is a strenuous walk. Participants must have good fitness for steep and rocky terrain and bring appropriate outdoor clothing, footwear and lunch. The distance is 20km/12.5miles.This walk is subject to good weather conditions. Suitable for over 18’s only. Meet at the walkers car park, Glencanisp road. Grid ref: NC107220.

The Great Nevis River race
Family fun for all ages. Join the Highland Heritage Ranger for the first annual Nevis boat race, a unique twist on the traditional duck race. Sponsor a boat for £5 each and be in the chance of winning £100. The boats will be launched all together from the Youth Hostel bridge in this giant game of Pooh sticks and the first boat to make it to the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre bridge will win its sponsor £100, the second boat in will get £50.
All the boats we will use are made of wood and glued with natural pitch, they are the same size and each one will have an individual number. All boats will be caught at the Visitor Centre but just in case any slip past they are fully biodegradable.
While waiting for the boats to arrive have a go at making your own paper boat or complete the riverside treasure trail.

Guided walk in Sutherland
Enjoy a 12km guided hill walk led by the High Life Highland countryside rangers, at Ben Hutig near Melness, north Sutherland. Visit the second highest sea cliffs on the mainland and head on to return via the summit of Ben Hutig (408m). Lots of interesting wildlife, geology and history to enjoy along the way. Some very rough ground and inclines to cover, so a good level of fitness and suitable walking gear is essential. Dogs are not welcome on these guided walks. Over 18years only. Booking is essential.

Frome Sheep to Shop – 3-week wool workshop
Join the Highland Heritage Ranger on this three-week course to learn how to take a raw sheep’s fleece, wash and clean it, dye it, spin it on a traditional drop spindle and finally weave a unique piece such as a shoulder bag, scarf, or picture to take home.
The sessions run once a fortnight with a total of 3 sessions from 11-3pm All 3 sessions are included in the one-off price. All three sessions will be run in Am Fasgadh at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore and participants will be surrounded by inspiration. Please bring a packed lunch to each session and during the lunch break there will be time to explore the folk museum. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided.
Some additional work at home may be required each week in order to complete the finished pieces by the end of the course.
Friday 28th June 11-4pm Week 1: Preparing the raw fleece, removing debris, and washing, Card pre-washed and dried fleece to remove further debris and learn how to dye fleece using natural materials.
Friday 12th July 11-4pm Week 2– Learn to spin fleece using a drop spindle, design finished item and start weaving.
Friday 26th July 2024 11-4pm Week 3 – Finish weaving item and add embellishments in Harris tweed.

Fun guy or foe? Join us to look at some of the spectacular mushrooms to be found in the woods and learn what you need to look for to identify them. This is designed as an identification workshop and not a foraging session. We will look at a variety of different species both edible and inedible. This event is not suitable for children.

Autumn Felt garlands – Share some You Time
Want to try something new while giving yourself some You Time, come along and join the Highland Heritage Ranger on this relaxed workshop where we will use felt sheets and simple sewing to create an autumn themed garland decoration for the house.
This 2-hour workshop is part of the monthly You Time traditional craft series where you can try new crafts and learn new skills in an informal, relaxed setting over a cup of tea and biscuits.
Tea, coffee, and biscuits are provided along with full tuition and equipment.

Spooktacular Halloween in the Glen
Drop in between 5.30-7.30pm to the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre to take part in our annual spooky trail and Halloween event. Come dressed up, bring along a carved pumpkin and be prepared for a fun night. Fire with toasted marshmallows, coffin feely box, apple dookin, crafts, tea and coffee and lots more going alongside the trail.
