Navy divers probe unexploded WW2 shells in Wick Bay

Royal Navy divers have investigated unexploded ordnance in the sea on the north side of Wick Bay in Caithness.

Local divers reported finding the shells on Saturday near the wreck of the Isleford, a steamer that went down in bad weather in 1942.

The navy divers arrived in Caithness on Monday and had to wait for fair weather before investigating the site.

A Royal Navy spokesman said there was no danger to the public and the ordnance was marked on charts.

The shells have been left as they were.

All 14 crew were lost after the Isleford got into difficulty.

Rockets carrying lines were fired from the shore to the stricken vessel during the efforts to rescue the men.
