The Care Inspectorate has reviewed self-directed support in Scotland in partnership with Healthcare Improvement Scotland and published their findings.

Effective self-directed support should enable people to make informed choices and decisions about their social care support and how it is delivered.

They looked at self-directed support in a sample of health and social care partnerships across Scotland to evaluate how well they are delivering better outcomes for people. They have issued individual inspection reports for each of the six partnerships we sampled alongside an overview report that gives our findings across the partnerships.

The Inspectorate found where self-directed support was being done well it offered a degree of flexibility, choice and control for people that was previously unavailable. However, it was not always allowing personalised approaches or shifting choice and control from services to people.

Some issues found are bigger than any one partnership and will not be resolved by partnerships working alone. The Inspectorate has presented these issues in an overview report as four topics for national debate across Scotland.
