Recycle Week 2016- Get involved and dont let a good thing go to waste

13th September 2016

Recycle Week 2016, which is taking place from the 12th to the 18th of September 2016, is set to see a whole host of action taking place across Scotland, with The Highland Council's Waste Team lending its support to the campaign and encouraging others to follow suit.

The week, which is coordinated by Zero Waste Scotland, aims to get everyone in Scotland recycling more by raising awareness of its benefits and promoting easy ways to do more.

Over the week The Waste Team will be out and about offering advice about recycling. You can find them in The Eastgate Centre, Inverness today (Tuesday 13) and Fort William High Street on Wednesday. They will also be at the Council's Recycling Centres helping people to recycle more.

Councillor Allan Henderson, Chair of Community Services said: "Last year around 58,000 tonnes of household waste were recycled by householders in Highland meaning we are now recycling around 44% of our waste in the region which is really good news. The Council would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in Highland for making use of their recycling services; it really does make a difference and reduces the amount of waste that is sent to landfill.

"A recent survey found that although most people have a great recycling routine in the kitchen they often forget the other rooms in the home such as the bathroom that also have easily recyclable products. There are lots of items in the bathroom waiting to be recycled that can make a huge difference including toothpaste boxes, shower gel containers, plastic shampoo/conditioner bottles, bleach and bathroom cleaners all of which can go in your blue bin."

Iain Gulland, Chief Executive of Zero Waste Scotland said:

“Recycle Week is all about mobilising action and getting as many people across Scotland to recycle more. Recent years have seen recycling becoming much more commonplace across the country, but we could all be doing a little bit more - whether it’s running an event in your workplace, or starting to recycle food waste at home, Recycle Week is a great time to commit to picking up a new habit and helping Scotland move towards our ambitious targets.

“It’s great to see The Highland Council taking part, and I would encourage businesses, community groups, schools and universities to get involved and sign up for Recycle Week."

Scots can also follow activity and share messages throughout the week at the Recycle for Scotland Facebook page or using #RecycleWeekScot on Twitter.
