Road Safety at School Crossings - Thurso - Police Scotland

23rd March 2016

Police in Thurso are urging motorists to drive safely around schools following a number of reports of drivers failing to stop at school crossings.

Three incidents of drivers failing to stop when being signalled to do so by a school crossing patroller using a lollipop sign have been reported. The most recent incident happened at around 2:50pm on Tuesday 15th March 2016 outside Mount Pleasant Primary School.

Two other incidents have been reported this year so far, on 22nd and 27th January. A 77 year-old man has reported to the Procurator Fiscal in relation to failing to stop for the school crossing outside Pennyland Primary School on 27th January. The other incidents, both at Mount Pleasant Primary School, are still being investigated.

Sergeant Stephen Mezals said: "I would like to take this opportunity to remind road users of the importance of obeying road traffic signs and requests and driving safely, especially around schools.

The poor attitude to road safety around schools displayed by a small number of drivers is concerning and I would like to encourage road users to treat all road users with respect and not to endanger other people.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
