Local community group bid to save towns Christmas lights

16th November 2015

A volunteer for Thurso Town Improvements Association is trying to gee up some Christmas community spirit in aid of Thursos Christmas lights. Marion OBrien is encouraging residents in Thurso from shops, offices, bars , cafes and schools to get involved with the fundraiser. To date, over 200 letters requesting support have been distributed by Marion and members of the Thurso Town Improvements Committee.

The aim of the fundraiser is to raise community support and some much needed cash to keep our town looking great during the festive season. Some people may not be aware but, due to storm damage and general wear and tear, Thurso's Christmas Lights are in much need of repair. The Committee do plan to purchase new lights for the town but the replacement cost is around £30,000.

The fundraiser requests that as many people as possible participates in any way they can. Throw on a Christmas jumper/tie/hair bobble/apron, anything at all you can get your hands on that makes you feel in the Christmas spirit and make a personal donation to the towns lights fund. This can be done from home or at work!

If some offices would like to participate in a Friday afternoon bake sale or something similar with the proceeds going towards the Christmas Lights Fund the TTIA wholeheartedly encourage this and of course will be available for any required tasting duties!

The idea behind the fundraiser is that if enough people in the town participate, they could raise a considerable amount for Thurso's Christmas lights. Proving that, a bit of community spirit and a small personal donation can go a long way. The ‘little from many’ approach.

The volunteers and committee members are very hopeful that they’ll be able to replace some of the lights for next year and fix some of the damaged ones if the fundraiser is successful.

The fundraiser has already sparked lots of interest on the TTIA’s facebook page where participants are being encouraged to send snaps of their Christmas attire using the hashtag #ThursoChristmasLightsFunDay

Donations can be submitted to Caithness Horizons from the 4th of December to the 12th of December where a member of the TTIA committee will collect them.

Thurso’s Christmas Fun Day is on Saturday 5th December where Santa and his reindeer will once again be on hand to chat with the children about their Christmas wishes. The TTIA really appreciate the support fun day receives and hope to see you all then, shopping locally and visiting Santa. The Christmas lights switch on will happen at 5pm on the 5th so why not join them in your festive attire and join in the fun.
