Mount Pleasant Primary School P5 class (+ Eco committee) joined Miller Academy Primary School P6 class to undertake a clean-up at Thurso Beach in Caithness on Tuesday 6 October.

Mr Harper from Mount Pleasant and Mrs Phares from Miller Academy brought fifty eight children in total to join forces with Paul Castle and Sam Watson the Highland Council Countryside Rangers and other helpers including Mrs Urquhart, Mr Boyter and Mrs Morris.

The joint beach clean was part of both school's studies in to the effects of litter on our seashore habitats and wildlife. The clean-up was officially registered with the Keep Scotland Beautiful ‘Clean up Scotland' project.

This project encourages groups to undertake litter picks to help improve our environment. All the children wore yellow bibs promoting the project during the clean-up. Working in small groups the pupils and helpers walked the entire length of the beach and removed every visible piece of litter they could find.

Paul Castle Highland Council’s North Sutherland and North Caithness Countryside Ranger said:"The Ranger Service is always happy to help support any group willing to clean-up our local environment. When we first arrived the beach looked relatively clean but it’s amazing how many small items of litter can be found when you look closely. By the time we finished we had filled several black plastic bags. Everyone worked very hard and really enjoyed helping make the seashore a more pleasant place to be for both the local people and our local wildlife. I can’t thank the children and helpers enough."
