Presenter Fern Britton Starts Fundraiser From John O'Groats

TV presenter Fern Britton started her quest to raise £57,000 by cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End today.

£57,000 is to help fund a research programme into the mystery and heartbreak of miscarriage led by Professor Robert Winston and his team.

The challenge is to cycle 57 miles per day and raise £57,000 for the charity

Her challenge web site says -
ecurrent miscarriage affects 1-2% of couples in the UK. This can lead to physical trauma, psychological stress and complications in a subsequent pregnancy, including preterm delivery, low birth weight and physical disabilities. Chromosomal errors in the embryo are one common reason although often the pregnancy losses remain unexplained. As a result, those affected receive either no treatment or are treated with drugs that have little effect. Further research is needed to understand the causes of miscarriage to enable clinicians to predict who is more likely to suffer a miscarriage and to develop effective preventative treatments.
