PLAY AND LEARNING INTO PRACTICE - Six Day Course

Are you a newly appointed member of staff or an existing member of an EARLY LEARNING AND CHILD CARE team seeking to increase or refresh your knowledge and practical skills prior to commencing a formal qualification to meet SSSC requirements? This practical six day training course delivered by CALA and HiMATS provides learners with an introduction to the value of play and learning. The course has the SQA NC unit "Child Development and Health" embedded within it, therefore is an ideal introduction to study for those beginning to work towards a relevant qualification.

Brief outline of key aspects of the six day programme:
Course introduction, expectations, communication and team building. Introduction to basic human needs, child development 0 - 16 years, including when and where children learn, defining and meeting children's changing needs. Overview of the eight key area of the Curriculum for Excellence.
Explore the value of active learning, developmental milestones, the influence of theorists on cognitive development, the adult role in supporting learning, current national guidance.
Consider principal factors affecting children's development and how these may have a positive or negative impact. National strategies to support children's well-being. Explore the importance of relationships to support children's development including partnership with parents and professionals.
Gain understanding of the value of play and play values, types of play, stages of children's play development and play theories. Look at effective interaction strategies to support children's learning.
Consider how environments evoke feelings, the components of an Early Years curriculum - space, play room layout, resources, and presentation, formatting sessions for early years, toddlers and OSC.

Practical workshops to support children's learning and development:
Paint, dough, clay, woodwork, junk modelling, woodwork, collage, woodwork
Music and movement
Physical and energetic play
Books and story telling
Drama, role play
Cookery
Sand, water and alternatives

This course is an accredited training therefore includes an element of weekly home study during the six days of the course. The course is free of charge to ELCC practitioners in current employment in Highland.

Applicants must be prepared to commit to attending all six days of the course and completing home study to gain the course completion certificate.

Dates: 18th & 25th February, 4th, 11th, 18th & 25th March 2015

Time: 9.45 am to 4 pm
Refreshments: Tea/Coffee and lunch provided
