Highland Council takes enforcement action on dog fouling

30th September 2014

The first two weeks of September saw Highland Council staff stepping up action on dog fouling in response to the Keep Scotland Beautiful annual ‘Ditch the Dirt' campaign.

During the fortnight Council employees were out and about talking to dog owners and other members of the public about dog fouling in Caithness, Ross-shire, Inverness and Lochaber.

Four fixed penalty notices were issued - two in the Balintore/Shandwick area and one each in the Tain and Kinlochleven areas.

Councillor Graham MacKenzie, Chair of the Council’s Community Services Committee said: "The campaign has really helped to focus attention on the issue which is of major concern to people across the Highlands. Most dog owners nowadays do act responsibly and realise that allowing their dog to foul is no longer acceptable; owners who continue to flaunt the law will hopefully now be getting the message that Highland Council does mean business!"

He added: “The irresponsible minority of dog owners should be aware that Highland Council intends to continue to take enforcement seriously; this is an ongoing action, not a once a year campaign.”

Members of the public who wish to report problems of dog fouling can contact The Council by calling 01349 886603 or emailing recycle[AT]highland.gov.uk
