IT might not attract quite the same attention as Glasgow's Commonwealth Games but a forthcoming event at this end of Scotland is being keenly anticipated.

It's the "Commonwick Games" which has its own royal connection, Wick being a royal burgh, and is being held as part of the town's annual gala.

Run on 'Highland', lines, it will feature tossing the caber and shot put, races, long and high jump, a tug of war and other attractions for children. Oh, yes...and not forgetting the intriguing Fairy liquid football. Bet they don't have that in Glasgow! The games are guaranteed to set some records as it's the inaugural year.

The event is part of the week's grand finale on August 2 which will also feature the traditional bonfire and fireworks display.
The town's annual carnival gets underway on Saturday with the crowning of gala queen Katie Dunnett who will then lead a procession of floats through the town.

Other events during the week include a fun day, swimming competitions, a dog show, a gymkhana, cycle races and bowling and fancy dress, a treasure hunt, a cupcake workshop and a Strictly Come Dancing competition.

The hard-working gala committee have again come up with a varied an imaginative programme and will hopefully be rewarded with some fair weather and some good cash returns.

In the current economic climate, money is tight, but the proceeds raised are spent on improving our town. So, in the words of a one-time Wick gala slogan - "Gie fit ye can".
