2014 Commonwealth Games Legacy plan for Highland approved

A 2014 Legacy Plan that highlights opportunities for Highland communities over the next five years, as a result of the Commonwealth Games, has been welcomed by Members of The Highland Council.

Councillors have given their approval for the Highland Legacy Plan which has been produced by High Life Highland for The Highland Council which is responsible for delivering the plan.

Member also agreed the establishment of a Games Legacy Fund of £100,000 to which eligible organisations will be able to bid for projects that fit with the requirements and ethos of the Council's Legacy Plan.

The Highland Legacy Plan - which also aims to match the Council's Programme and priorities over the period 2014-2019 - and the Legacy Fund, will be formally launched with more details, during the Queen's Baton Relay tour of the Highlands.

Based around four key themes set by the Scottish Government, the Highland Legacy Plan’s actions benefits and opportunities will be:

· Active - increasing opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity.
· Connected - cultural and creative opportunities.
· Sustainable - environmentally responsible, sustainable communities.
· Flourishing - increasing economic growth potential.

Leader of The Highland Council, Councillor Drew Hendry said: "I encourage everyone to enjoy and participate in the range of opportunities on offer through the Highland Legacy Plan and Legacy Fund. We all want a strong, lasting and sustainable legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games and together we can achieve this for the Highlands."
