SPRING SHOW ATTRACTS EQUINE ENTHUSIASTS FROM FAR AND WIDE

3rd April 2014

Photograph of SPRING SHOW ATTRACTS EQUINE ENTHUSIASTS FROM FAR AND WIDE

Last weekend was the North Highland College Equestrian Centre Spring Show which attracted entries from all over Caithness, Sutherland and Inverness. Judges Fiona Cameron, Melrose & Kimberley Nicoll, Ayrshire were both extremely impressed with both the standard of horses & ponies and the riders.

The first Championship of the day was the In Hand Championship which was kindly sponsored by Eric Grant Plant Hire. The Champion of this section went to Team Skelton and ‘King’ - a 3 year old Irish bred Gelding that will contest Hunter Youngstock classes throughout the season. Reserve of the section was awarded to Ashley Anderson and the coloured yearling ‘Astonend Bellisima’.

The Mini Championship which was kindly sponsored by ‘The Home Bakery’ Wick was a hotly contested section with several talented young riders competing for top place. Emily Campbell came out on top with her pony ‘Tess’ and Reserve going to Emily on her other pony ‘Ellie’, ridden in the Championship by Rebecca Sinclair.

The next section of the day was the NPS M & M Championships which had many qualifiers on offer throughout the day. Local riders gained qualification to the NPS National Championships which was sponsored by Hilltop Horses and Team Skelton. The winner of this section was awarded to Team Skelton and their Section D, Gelding Fronarth ‘Ace of Spades’, already a prolific winner in the show ring. Reserve was awarded to Inverness based Olivia Grant and ‘Hope Brenin’, a Section A pony that is hugely successful in Working Hunter Classes.

The final section on the first day was the Ridden Championship which was sponsored by local Farrier ‘Caithness farriery Services’ for the third time in the day Team Skelton took the top honours this time with their large plaited coloured horse, ‘Joker’ who the judge described as giving the ride of the day. Reserve went to Emma Gunn and the prolific 143 cm Show Hunter Pony, ‘Chrimson Moonlight’.

Day 2 was equally as busy with a full schedule of Working Hunter classes sponsored by Aberdeenshire Saddlery. The course for the day was well dressed with inviting fences and obstacles for competitors to negotiate. At the end of the day 1st and 2nd prize winners were invited back into the arena for the championship. This time top honours went to 9 year old Rory McIntosh and his pony ‘Meadowlands Bride Groom’ from Inverness and Reserve went to Olivia Grant and her pony ‘Thistledown Royal Cadet’, a combination that competed at both HOYS and the RI in 2013.

A raffle was also held at the show with many people kindly donating prizes. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to The Anthony Nolan Trust.
