Probationer Teachers Welcomed to the Highlands for 2013

Over 100 probationer teachers were welcomed to the Highlands today at an induction meeting held at Milton of Leys Primary School, Inverness by Councillor Alasdair Christie, Chairman of The Highland Council’s Adult and Children’s Services Committee.

Councillor Alasdair Christie, Chairman of the Council’s Adult and Children’s Services Committee, said: “Probationer Teachers play a vital role in the provision of education for our pupils. I am delighted that Highland Council has again been able to offer an increased number of placements for these teachers starting out in their educational careers. The fresh talent and enthusiasm that they bring with them is infectious and provides a welcome boost among our schools.”

Hugh Fraser, Highland Council’s Director of Education, Culture and Sport also welcomed the 111 probationers starting in the 2013/14 academic year. The number of probationers is an 8% increase on the 2012/13 intake which saw 103 probationers last year working in Highland schools.

The new teachers will be starting work in schools across the Highlands when Primary and Secondary pupils return to school following their summer break on Tuesday 20 August.

Of the 111 probationers, 52 have been allocated to secondary schools and 59 to primary 59 schools in the Highlands.

The number of probationer teachers in primary schools in each area is: 12 in Caithness, 3 in Sutherland, 23 in Inverness, 13 in Ross and Cromarty, 2 in Skye and Lochalsh, and 6 in Lochaber.

The 52 probationer teachers in secondary schools are located in each area as follows: 7 in Caithness, 5 in Sutherland, 12 in Inverness, 11 in Ross and Cromarty, 2 in Nairn, 3 on the Isle of Skye, 4 in Lochaber, and 8 in Badenoch and Strathspey.

The numbers of secondary school probationers who will be working in the following subjects are: Art and Design (5), Biology (4) and Chemistry (2) with Science, Computing (1), English (10), French (1), Geography (3), History (4), Mathematics (5), Music (4), Physical Education (5), Physics with Science (4), and Technological Education (4).

The probationer induction day is the first of a number of in-service training days throughout the year specifically allocated to probationer teacher induction and training.
