Wick High School Belize Trip - Pudding Night and Silent Auction

18th April 2013

This summer ten Wick High School pupils from fifth and sixth year will be flying to Belize for a four week adventure.

SILENT AUCTION AND PUDDING NIGHT - FRIDAY 26TH APRIL 7.00PM

Teacher Chris Aitken, who will be accompanying the pupils said “This is an amazing opportunity for the young people involved to expand their horizons and make them really think about life and career choices. This experience was offered to all 5th and 6th year students and we emphasised how much work it would take to get them out there. These 10 students really rose to the challenge and have worked incredibly hard this year to raise the required funds. This could also not have been done without the generosity shown by the people of Caithness. I hope that this trip will set a great precedent for these types of experiences for Wick High students in the future.”

The trip will be comprised of three parts and will last around 4 weeks. A large part of the Tropical Rainforest phase will be working with the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh at their base in Las Cuevas in the Chiquibul rainforest where the students will be assisting them to conserve plants and animal habitats.

•Tropical Rainforest Phase, Volunteering Phase and the Reflection Phase.

As part of the Tropical Rainforest phase, pupils will be undertaking their Duke of Edinburgh Gold expedition through the jungle. During their volunteering phase, pupils will choose to work on projects that will benefit their Belizean community.

An important part of the trip is the Reflection Phase, where students will work with AdventuraScotland on activities that will help them come to terms with what they have achieved and how it will affect their outlook on life, career and education.

The pupils and teachers have been tasked with raising all their own funds and to date have raised £25,053.

Fifth year pupil Jenny Brass said “'From bag packing at the co-op to having a stall in Wick for fun day to a disco and back sales at the school we have managed to raise a sum that at first seemed impossible! I am thrilled with the response the public and businesses have given us with our efforts, and I hope our upcoming event will help us with the last push to reach the £28,000. It will definitely not be an event to miss!”

Local Wick Councillor, Gail Ross will compere a silent auction, to be held in Wick High School on 26th April from 7-9PM she said “This is a fantastic opportunity for these young people and I am more than happy to help them reach their target of £28,000.
We have had some fantastic responses from local businesses and organisations; some of the auction prizes literally cannot be bought and are unique to this auction!

Whisky collectors will be delighted with a tour, tasting and a chance to bottle your own unique 15 year old bespoke malt in the distillery that produces the world’s best whisky; Old Pulteney.

You can fly over Caithness in a chartered flight for three people and take in our beautiful scenery thanks to Far North Aviation.

You can win a two night stay in the exclusive Ackergill Tower, including dinner bed and breakfast.

You can experience the time when Wick was the herring capital of the world out on the Isabella Fortuna thanks to the Wick Society Boat Section.

A signed Wick Academy strip and hospitality at a game, local fishing trips, local seacoast adventure… the list goes on!

It really will be a chance to experience what Caithness has to offer and help support our young people to go on the trip of a lifetime, plus win a very special prize! I urge local people to come along and get involved!”

A total of 32 prizes have been donated so far, with possibly more to come.

As well as an auction, the pupils will be hosting a pudding night. All the 6th year students will be helping out to make a large selection of puddings that you can enjoy whilst perusing the lots available in the silent auction.

Participants can buy a pudding ticket at the door for £3 which gives them access to an all-you-can-eat pudding menu, as well as free tea and coffee throughout the event.
